Anchoring involves defining the value of something where it was previously undefined. What you describe is simply an extreme initial offer. You're right that it isn't necessarily sinister.

I imagine it's tough to display DRM-protected content in a browser without being able to make copies using something like a Chrome extension, which would infuriate the publishers.

Frankly, I'm really surprised this took so long. The mechanism by which a phone call is routed/made is a compliment to the iPhone, and hence any direction Apple can take that commodifies the process is good for their core business (making g

Strange that nobody seems to have asked the obvious question: what does he think makes the game so much fun? More specifically, how much thought/effort did he think into getting the creeper/sound/cave mechanics just the right amount of scar

There's always the possibility that (1) will one day change. For example, when, in some state of emergency, the US decides to back one political strength over another. I'm not military or historical expert, so I might be wrong, but I could

Err, the other obvious explanation is that whoever was at these meeting really don't have anything to hide, and Arrington is grossly exaggerating the few anonymous tips he's gotten.

Good point. It gives a common language, common metrics, etc. I suppose my argument is, then, that good design shouldn't be collaborated on, but should instead originate in the mind of a single auteur, without the constraint of having to con

I would have thought that top VC's would be smart not to say a word about this that isn't vetted by their lawyers. Except maybe Dave McClure :-P

I'm not sure how to say this without coming off as a smart-ass, but isn't "used at Microsoft for UX design" more of an example of what not to do? Last time I tried to use a Windows machine, I ended up shutting it down by accident (was try

There's a difference between discipline and subjugation. Many kids have the mentality of slaves - disgruntled, fearful, and angry.

Woah. Leo looks like he was having a really bad day or something. Why didn't he just say "I know, I know, it's a review unit, I'm sending it back in 7 days and going out to buy my own, because I like it so much"? However you respond to "did

Don't forget everything they do teach: being wholly subjugated to the control of a superior (where else do you need to ask before going to the bathroom?), unquestioning obedience, working hard without a hint of interest, etc.

Is this ethical? http://dl.dropbox.com/u/404957/donorschoose.png The opt-in is for an extra 15% of your donation to be "optionally" donated to the charity. Because it is "optional", this 15% doesn't count towards the official "% of donati

Meh. Looks like more trouble that it's worth. With the new(ish) RFID chips, I can "swipe" a credit card without taking it out of my wallet. If I wanted a "secure PIN" feature, I could use my ATM card. Maybe I'll change my mind if my credit
