One trend, if you can even call it that, that I really like is version controlled virtualized dev environments. Tools like Vagrant (a toolbox for Chef + Virtualbox pretty much), ( http://www.vagrantup.com ) Make it possible to version your

Yep, and this is why evented io is pretty much mandatory for a modern webserver (like nginx). If you need Apache you can always proxy nginx in front of it.

Yeah, definitely thought about it. It probably makes more sense, however it's a bit more of a pain since you have to re-upload everything to that folder. However, it's probably a better way of doing things in terms of invalidation, as visit

It's my personal site, experiments like this are why it exists :) As far as costs go, my Rackspace VPS was $11/mo. Given that I get close to zero traffic and CF is $0.15/GB, this will cost less than $1/mo. I'd say that's a pretty good price

Hehe, I meant 'improving' not 'increasing'. I'll admit it's less convenient in some ways, but not significantly so. At any rate, it being my personal site, I'm going to make experimental engineering decisions. I like the aesthetic of S3 and

Haml's great for outlining the structure of a document. For static pages with lots of em's strong's and such it's better to use something like markdown. Luckily you can easily embed markdown inside HAML. Just mark off a block with :markdown

I can totally see the value now. I haven't used XML in heterogenous environments much, but I can see the value now. Thanks for the careful response!

I guess, but even if that's the case, who cares if the message is formatted right if it's still invalid. I guess I haven't really worked in a heterogenous environment with a lot of XML before though, I can see the potential value there, but

I never really got the 'why' behind XML Schemas. Why would you validate a document with a schema vs actual code? It's just a bigger pain in the ass, and more limited.

I'll add to your advice about circles, which I generally agree with (although I usually introduce myself immediately once there's a break in conversation, even if I don't have anything to add). I would amend your advice to say you don't nec

They have to. I've never negotiated w/ amazon, but their list bandwidth prices were 3 - 4 times more expensive than what i got negotiating with CDNs and carriers directly. That's to say nothing about cogent, who will sell you bandwidth at $

Maybe, but I have my reservations. I think the attitude that the future is the tech that extracts the best performance with the least work out of future hardware is mistaken. Clojure may be a great language for a multi-core world, but I'm n

Good point about Dr. Nic, I do hope he meant it that way. That said, being sarcastically sexist/racist/nudist in public is a bad idea, because other people don't know your true intentions.

There's a lot of gender insensitivity and macho attitudes in software in general. Ruby attracts flamboyant, outspoken and bombastic personalities. These two things collide to make rubyists look more sexist as a group than other developers.
