I like the SQLite config. SQLite seems like more of a PITA for some cases, but when using something like chef to configure an instance, SQLite makes more sense than using something like sed to mangle a config file. Now, yes, you can define

Well, then setup bind. It's not the end of the world :). That, or just use /etc/hosts, it's more of a pain, but for testing you just need a handful of URLs.

You can't just agree on syntax, IMHO the reason for that is the best template languages have the full language available. You need a full-language for a great template language. Smarty, for instance, sucks. HAML, which is terse, but has acc

Not really, whenever you're looking at a landscape far away (focussing at infinity) everything is in focus. In fact, any situation where everything in front of you is equidistant from your eyes will mimic this everything is in focus situati

Small world, I've contributed a fair amount of code to node-paperboy. In fact, I'm the person who forgot to check for URL encoding in paths! Thanks for finding that. I thought about the whole 404 thing, funny thing is, I didn't really think

You're deriding the course based on medium, not message. Perhaps we also shouldn't use a 'common' language like English and revert to being taught in Latin. Additionally, If you'd actually seen The Wire you probably would not be arguing aga

Since we're talking about node... I like async, and I like node. However, for plain jane dynamic web apps, with no real time needs, I see it as being more of pain than using Ruby (or Python, or whatever). Why? JS syntax kinda sucks for deal

Use Heroku. The cost of acquiring or hiring the sysadmin knowledge is going to far exceed just using Heroku. This includes Heroku's main competitor, Engineyard. EY has its upsides (and downsides), but definitely requires more sysadmin exper

xrep/xreq really isn't well documented. I'm writing a learn by example series for ZeroMQ in Ruby, that already includes an XREP example. I'm planning on adding in XREQ this weekend. http://github.com/andrewvc/learn-ruby-zeromq

This is one reason why I always use parens on my method calls. Some rubyists find it cluttering, yeah, but I think it makes reading code easier. The other one to watch out for is precedence of {} vs do; end. Example: > x = [1,2].map

You're right about that. But people shouldn't be learning rails from online tutorials, they should be reading Active Web Development with Rails which has clear instructions. Learning new languages from random online tutorials is always goin

Maybe this isn't written down clearly everywhere but it should be. If you're new to ruby ALL you need to know is that everyone in production runs: Rails 2 (currently at 2.3.8) Ruby 1.8.7 or REE (which are 100% compatible, since REE is only

Depends on where you live, but your house doesn't have redundant connections and service contracts to fix them ASAP. Your home net connection may be reliable, now, but if something bad happens it could be down for days, not hours.
