Microsoft dropped support for IE5.0 and IE5.5 on their websites. I think that's a sufficient argument right there. :) Haven't had anyone argue with that so far...

As the Google crawler is a just a basic HTML parser, it makes sense that certain errors could cause major problems for a site — messed up nesting, missing quotes, etc. Google likely has fairly sophisticated error recovery in place, but I'm

I wish people who know little about HTML, XHTML and CSS wouldn't write such posts just for the hell of it. Jeff is a respected programmer, but front-end developer he is not. I'm not going to go into details of why he's wrong, because a) thi

I can't tell if you bothered researching the facts or reading the article, but I would guess that you didn't based on your comment. So here it goes: the iPhone is free because that's largely what the Japanese are used to. Most of their phon

Bleh. I guess you can't expect too much from a publication associated with TechCruch. As I said over there: 1) There's no stats, so how can they claim it's not selling well. 2) There are many iPhone apps developed by the Japanese, that woul

But Chrome uses WebKit and Apple contributors were the ones who got WebKit to pass Acid 3 first and released a proper build long before Chrome came around. :) So, again, as mentioned before, depends on your criteria. As somebody said, this

Meh, some of these are true... especially Acid 3. (Depends on whether you consider safari == webkit and if you count Chrome.) Afaik, Opera still hasn't released a public version of their browser that passes Acid 3 fully (including speed). A

I find a couple of things ridiculous about this whole thing. 1) The music industry refused to acknowledge the impact of iTMS instead pretending as if CD sales are the only thing making them money. I might be wrong, but isn't iTMS the number

Cool stuff, but I'm having a problem with the new Web Inspector... it seems to show the ungzipped file size for all files, rather than the gzipped one (which would be more useful).

They also provide tracking service completely independent of the ads. http://www.pinchmedia.com/developers/ So while it doesn't cover all apps in the app store, it covers more than just apps that use their advertising platform.

I hate that this is the fourth or fifth time we've had a story about the guy on the front page of HN. The first one was nice, all the others are pretty much differently worded copies of the first. (Wish I had more karma so I could downvote

Uhhh... I can't tell if you're serious or not. Transmission's been actively developed for so many years now. To suggest that someone (especially with little experience) could just magically create something better is absurd. Come on...

The "usability" mistake of HN is the freaking ginormous line-widths. :( I would consider custom stylesheet, but there's no good hook in HN html to grab on to without screwing up other sites. (Seriously, more sites should start adding their

Definitely agree with this. There is something to be said for using liquid layouts on a site like Amazon, where you have product listings next to each other — it's useful to have more space. But it's just plain wrong to have a liquid layout

Bloat doesn't necessarily mean code size. It could also mean redundant selectors, code that is difficult to maintain, and plethora of other things. As mentioned previously, I'm a front-end web developer, I spend majority of my time coding g

I'll jump in, because I spent six months developing a web app using Sass. It's a nightmare to maintain on any sort of complicated, big project. For various reasons... I previously blogged about it here: http://fecklessmind.com/2009/01/28/f

A little bit of self-promotion never hurt anyone. Although, I'm honestly hoping someone will find it useful as I know a lot of people struggle with forms and styling them in a cross-browser compatible way.

If you don't self promote in some way, how will anyone know you're writing something somewhere. :) Seriously, though, I think this is where the voting comes in and the community will decide if the article is interesting or not.

Yep, it passes. But it could be much, much better: 1) It's clearly not for the dial-up users, even though there's still a lot of them 2) Semantic IDs and class-names would really be nice. I disagree with some of the choices made for element
