Cool, you deserve many up votes for this! I just played around with it quickly, pasted in the recursive definition of factorial: (def fact (x) (if (< x 1) 1 (* x (fact (- x 1))))) It was fairly quick, but the results came back as floati

Sure, it's OK to pretend that they mean something... If you feel it helps make you look stronger, apply/get patents. Just try not to pay through the nose to do it... be careful with those lawyers. Just don't worry about stepping on the othe

Yawn... First of all it's not PG's patent. Its Yahoo's. Second, if anyone ever goes after you on a software patent, celebrate! It means you are a success. It means you have deep enough pockets to be considered worth the trouble. Third, as m

Yes, sorry I was being cranky yesterday. I had just come off a harrowing (but productive) week on the Job... Publish or perish time for me! So after my hangover wore off (we went out last night), I decided that I shouldn't be such a grouch

Funny. I read this piece and was waiting for the profound statement that was going to convince me. But at the end it sounded like the message was "Google guys and gals are productive in other languages than LISP". Huh!? Not very convincing.

Look I know it's an ignorant post of mine. But I use CLISP and I am very busy with a lot of things these days. Too many to count... But my plan is to continue to use CLISP until I become convinced that arc will help me in some way. I have a

That may be true. But the thing I really love about Sweden, is that I am guessing that these guys will pay at the 40% bracket and do it out of a sense of obligation. And when they go out and celebrate their spoils, they will do it with a lo

As an American living in Sweden, I know a bit about their system. It's not heavy on giving out jail terms. Nor should it be! These guys are going to walk. And while perhaps they do make a dollar and a penny off the ads, I doubt they are in

Of course I don't agree with this guy, but I think we need to dissect the common entrepreneurial statement "I don't want to work for others". Now I am sure that we all agree that entrepreneurs do in fact need to "work for others", namely th

Actually micro-credit works. The one supplying the capital needs to be fair about the rate they get in return though.

Boy he really screwed the pooch on that one. LOL! He was described as "a fragile individual, with no particular genius who was facing family problems." That describes the majority of people I know! Somehow though he weaseled his way into th

Nice lecture... I am sending it on to my students. But did anyone get a load of that old lisp machine? You could just feel how sluggish it must have been :-) 20 years on and things are much snappier! Thanks Intel and AMD!

It depends on the idea one has. For the idea of my company, I would have no problem making it public. It's based on solving fundamental research problems. Anyone is welcome to the area if they dare. :-) If the idea is more about what could

Having lived most of my life in the US with its large gulf between the rich and the poor and in Sweden, which really is much more egalitarian, I have to say I prefer a society with more equality. I was making a lot of money before I left th

Yes, I suspect that you are right. But it's depressing for a 40 year like myself who 'wasted his time' in academia. Somehow academia/research was nice earlier and I had some luck getting tolerable positions, etc. But it's been tough keeping

The interview paints the ideal starting entrepreneur as someone aged 25, not 18. And the implication is that this is being generous... The message is that anyone over 30, not to mention 40, need not apply. Of course this does not really bot

I do like the picture. I see a lot of traps and temptations that get in peoples' way. But we should remember that in some sense we must all individually self-define what "success" is. I just don't buy the rat-race-up-the-mountain metaphor.
