There is a very clear flaw in your mathematical reasoning here, let's walk through it. Consider your second probability comparison: the difference between a probability of 0.500 and 0.501. You have this correct, the difference is 0.001

This really shows how much we depend on (and exploit) open source software. The amount of infrastructure needed for a very simple product is tremendous.

That’s not what I asked. I know what the distinction is. I asked why would I ever need that distinction in a program. In 10 years I’ve never come across a situation where I found that distinction useful.

Why is this distinction important practically?

Computation cannot be reduced to simply functions, that’s why we need something like the lambda calculus to express computation. There are functions within the calculus, but to say that “computation is a function” is not correct.

This mapping of inputs to outputs is only superficial and hides that fact that computation is inherently “sequential” as you say. That’s why the even lambda calculus requires reductions. Of course I prefer writing in a functional style, bec

Based on what? What evidence is there that FP actually has any effect on a project?

I wouldn’t say he tried to destroy functional programming. If you read his response he pretty clearly says that he just thinks that FP as a solution to all problems is “overselling” the solution. And I 100% agree. Thinking that functional p

This is such a great and actually important comment. I’ve been obsessed with program correctness / verification for a while now. It just seems like the holy grail that we can’t fully attain yet. But you keep bumping into certain walls,

That's called temporal coupling, where some code only works if some previous code set some variable earlier in time. And it's a sign that you're building an implicit state machine.

Tabs have always bothered me. You have the OS, which has its own mechanism for launching and switching between applications. And then one of those applications (the browser) launches and switches between applications within it. It’s always

Lots of negativity around the polymorphic JSON types. I don't think this will be a problem at all in practice. It's fairly simple to limit the conditional that checks the type to exactly one place via a parsing step. This is basic

I don't understand - how is this a loss for CS? You used algorithm analysis to identify an inefficiency an improved that inefficiency. That is what Computer Science is. CS is not its notation - it is the act of doing what you just desc

What does the number of commits have to do with anything? That doesn’t imply any kind of quality, right? Also, have you taken a look at the source code for Redux let’s say? It’s an extremely small library. Not exaggerating, it’s on the orde

Relational algebra notation is so much more concise and readable. We’ve mangled so many very simple concepts because someone decided that math is offensive or something, so any math notation is automatically “not fit for software.” Computin

While TLA+ is not intended to verify specific code implementations, we have to admit that that is the holy grail. In my view there are 2 main spheres of practical software: design and construction. Unfortunately, today's construction t

The unfortunate truth is that once you pick apart the definitions of deep things like logic and math, you see that we don’t even all agree on them. We like to think that because we can describe something with math it’s inherently true, but

Why do you want that? Interestingly, Joe Armstrong said that people always asked about a static type system, but he couldn’t figure out the value of them. They were able to build extremely reliable systems with Erlang’s existing type system
