This is a personal obsession of mine. I don’t subscribe at all to the philosophy of “just build and ship it and let the users give feedback on any bugs.” I think that’s totally a misunderstanding of agile - agile assumes that your code was

The keywords in what you said is “to me.” For some reason, passionate work from home workers assume everyone likes what they like and everyone has the same situation as them. I prefer going to the office. It’s not a moral failing, it’s just

I found their overall response to be thoughtful and objective, and painted an overview of the situation. I found your response to hone in on one detail and contribute nothing useful to the conversation.

Avoiding the “boilerplate” of error handling means that you have implicitly coupled code now. Exceptions make local reasoning not possible. I guess you may want that in a small minority of cases, but I don’t understand the benefit they give

Haskell choose syntax that is similar, if not exactly based on math. I would argue that all other programming languages have chosen completely arbitrary syntax, we’re just used to them.

None of the constraints you provided are useful in any way. That’s the problem - for some reason people get addicted to the machinery of types, but fail to use them for anything of substance in a real system.

Yea and I consider dependent types to be a false idol for the reasons I outlined before. Eventually you just need to compute an arbitrary program within a type check, which is equivalent to just executing the program to begin with.

You either misunderstood or misstated the Curry-Howard isomorphism. Types correspond to _propositions_, programs themselves correspond to proofs. Now, that is one hell of a correspondence and I don’t mean to downplay it at all. But the reas

There is no need to have “type” tests in dynamically typed languages. Dynamically typed objects are implementation details, you test without referring to the underlying types. Also, static types _are_ manual testing, you need to write the t

I said that they can catch typos. They’re not generally useless, they are just useless with respect to software correctness.

You just have to recognize that Lisp is the only true path, and let that guide you to salvation. That’s not even a joke. The ability to write elisp and bind it to keys is much more useful than the “text editing as programming language” para

Testing / verification is the hardest problem in computing. I don’t think the author actually understands why that is and has a few superficial gripes with how codebase are tested. That’s not to say that a lot of test suites are actual

All of the important ideas in all of the fields that you mentioned have an absolute foundation in math. Just because we are able to work without using math everyday does not reduce the relevance of math to programming at all. Programming is

CS needs to move much farther toward math and not away from it. Naming things well is always a worthy goal, but just like DDD tells us, it’s a fool’s errand in a global namespace. The distinction between certain concepts are so subtle that

You really hit the nail on the head here. It’s so easy for people to see something that took years to create, and pick out the one or two flaws in it. Meanwhile, those flaws are exponentially small compared to the benefit that an idea might

You specifically said correctness. You brought up speed and maintainability. I specifically want to know how _incorrect_ code, which is code that doesn’t perform its intended function, can make a business money or have any value at all.

For me the best analogy is carpentry vs. architecture. I’m not saying anything about FP In particular. But there’s a cohort of people that just want to “build stuff” like you said. And then there’s people who want to architect a solution be

The path you describe ("input data to database query") is most certainly representable by a graph. I'm not sure what you mean by "static graph." I do believe our memory is persistent, "static," and finite.

I think a graph is how we perceive code, I just think the human brain has a very unique way of comprehending graphs. It seems to me like the graph is “indexed” in multiple different ways, so that multiple paths exist between nodes. The brai

I’m very skeptical that 60% of all people prefer to work from home. In my experience, it’s a small but vocal minority who don’t value the social component of an office. I think work from home should totally be optional, but why do work-from

What you described is exactly what I’ve been doing when building UIs. All of the logic of the front end application is completely outside of the view layer. I think this coupling of the view vs. the front end application is bad, and it’s th

What math notation uses curly braces and angle brackets? All math notation is terse and focused on efficient expressions of ideas. Haskell syntax is much closer to all of math than C-families.

When I said “amortized” in this case, I just mean that the cost of the initial page load is spread out throughout the length of the session. Like you said, if you just want to quickly open an email then close the app, the session time will
