The problem is that people could be insincere, non-rational or ignorant. I doubt they will know what their problems are, what they are willing to pay or what the solution could be. There's a great quote by Henry Ford: "If I had asked people

I think a better approach is to solve your own problems. This way you don't have to waste time cold calling people and hoping they are sincere with you with their feedback. You are the user and the creator... It's a very powerful position t

I have been programming for the last 15 years and I still sometimes look things up, even in languages I use daily. I would not really change this, since if I use it often I will remember it - - and if not, it's just one search away. I think

Great tool! I also find the title funny (which referes to following quote by Jamie Zawinski: Some people, when confronted with a problem, think “I know, I'll use regular expressions.” Now they have two problems.)

I am sure there will be people that make money on the advice that's given. And I am sure most of the advice is valid. The question is: is it really worth $1000? Maybe you could have saved that $1000 and done these optimizations yourself (th

Their business model isn't creating software - it's selling "get rich fast schemes" and other information for high margins. You are the target of their sales channel. You can just see it in the financial Brennan posts: 12% comes from sellin

Being a founder of a todo-list featured in the article (Todoist) I find your comment quite ignorant. Modern task managers aren't just about managing text. For example, our app integrates with Gmail, Outlook and Thunderbird and makes it easy

I don't think you have failed. I think your strategy has failed. Maybe a better strategy would have been to still have your job (part-time?) and still have a visa and then use the rest of the time to create your product. You might use a lot

I would recommend reading "Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krug. It will teach you the most important aspects of a usable design - - which are much more important than just doing a pretty design.

I don't think sketching is only useful for designers. Before I solve complex coding problems I usually have a block where I can scribbled and sketch solutions. This method makes it much easier to brainstorm and think than using something ri

I have used something similar since 2007 ( http://amix.dk/blog/post/19199 ), I only use it on client side to generate DOM elements and generally it's a nice approach (I like this much better than constructing HTML via innerHTML). The gene

Deferred pattern isn't from jQuery. It's from Twisted and the first JavaScript library to use it was MochiKit. A nitpick I know, but I think it's good to know where things really come from ;-)

I also found Kathy's blog very insightful and it's a great tragedy that she stopped writing. An eye-opener for me was her "Is Twitter TOO good?" post: http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2007/0... For me, this opened up

I can't believe this biased and unintelligent rant is being upvoted. HTML5 does not suck because of JavaScript, or because of using greedy algorithms, or because people allocate too much memory. It sucks because browser support isn't there
