There's something about anonymous commenters bashing PG and YC on reddit, of all forums, that makes me smile.

It may not be as bad a mistake as you think. There's some experimental (if unintuitive) evidence that rewarding individual contributions in organizations is harmful, even to that individual's motivation. The extrinsic motivation extinguishe

Everything written in the article rings true. One effect he didn't mention is that the poisonous confidence-destruction and the lack of learning are self-reinforcing. It creates a cycle which discourages quitting. I think, though, that the

Good ideas. I think meaningful, fulfilling core responsibilities are more important, though. If the product sucks, I would be unhappy working on it no matter the pay or perks.

A couple arguments in favour of inspections, Fagan-style: - Although it takes a brutal-seeming amount of time, many teams get a net time savings thanks to earlier bug detection. - It's a learning experience for everyone involved, so there i

Ah, I bet that last point is key. I know nothing about how hiring works for senior positions. One way or another, I hope you find a job you love.

Yes, it does. Thanks for sharing. It seems like you're pleased with your decision. And, good luck.

Strong disagree. I work at one of the biggest companies. I help out with hiring. Startups are a plus, and it's not just me. We, like everyone else, look for evidence that you've done stuff. In a startup, what you've done is obvious.

I agree there are difficult issues, this thread has unearthed several! I will be honest though -- I thought of this in the context of poppysan's post, in which he or she claimed significantly greater-than-zero value for an idea. My own pers

Effectively, what you're saying is "fuzzy" ideas have low value, and we would end up with market for full business plans.

That's a good point. I thought about it some more, I think we would end up with trusted idea 'editors'. Folks with no reputation would be forced to go to these high-reputation editors to resell ideas. These editors would gain reputation for

I can't help but want to provide a counter-example to your second point -- I was accepted last year despite having attended a school that most Americans haven't heard of.

It depends on what you want to get out of them. If all you do is build a library, you'll never get anything out of it, since you actually need to study the books for that. :P If you want a reference, then by all means take aston and Hexayu

OK, here is some of the "why" of facebook for those of us who aren't heavy users. Facebook is casual and useful. It's easy to set up an event or fundraiser, invite everyone you know, put up pictures about the event, and so on. Many commen
