While I absolutely believe that breathing techniques can be beneficial for ADHD (I’ve got it, and our almost-7 y/o daughter does, too), the mechanism posited here seems… questionable. One region of the brain getting more oxygen? If tha

+1 for the Monitor III. I remember being amazed to see the early Ultimas in color, because for me they’d always just had different “patterns”.

I’ve spent some time working in electronic trading, and I agree with you. Not only is the compensation very comfortable, but it’s the most interesting work I’ve ever done. That’s a tough combination to resist. As a result, it attracts peopl

Is this the most capable open-source core we’ve seen? Not sure how it compares to BOOM. Are there any other out-of-order designs which have been open sourced?

If the rumors are true about increased frequency and IPC for Zen3, we should be in for quite a ride. Zen4 and a shrink to 5nm next year ought to produce some further benefits. I’m too old to “hate” Intel but the improvements we are seeing

Same here. I was waiting to see if it would cross the point of no return and obliterate their ground facilities... again. Instead, looks to have been a nearly perfect test. Onward!

Hi Ken, love pretty much everything you write. Was wondering, is it correct to assume that all of the 8086 would have been laid out entirely by hand? Certainly special blocks like these charge pumps must have been, but was there any sort of

Finance space, under 100 people. Most servers are either latency-sensitive or 24/7 fully-loaded HPC. Neither case fits the cloud model. We do use cloud for build/test, though.

Disclaimer: Former FB engineering employee. I have rarely seen a greater bunch of whining here. Don’t like FB as a business? Fine, I don’t really either. But they take care of their people. If there must be an outpouring of whining, maybe d

My favorite quote from work, somewhat apropos: “I know people making good money trading corn who would be shocked to learn that it’s a plant.”

This is outstanding, thanks Josh! I’ve been getting started with FPGAs and a simple dynamic memory interface with comments and discussion is a huge help.

Sure. I’m talking about the general category of “software which must work, else people will die”. The difference between working 99.9% of the time, vs working 100% of the time appears to be very expensive. Automakers and their suppliers cou

My dad recently ditched his Audi Q7. Not for exactly the same reasons but because of endless electronic glitches and downright bizarre behavior. Now he’s got an EcoBoost F150 and loves it. Consumer-grade hardware & software is a wonderf

E-bikes are a funny thing. Living in Seattle, they were everywhere. Having now moved to the flatlands of Chicago, I see more Ferraris than e-bikes. I’m a “conventional” cyclist but totally get the appeal of electricity in hilly terrain. Not

Binned & overclocked i9-9980XE’s are already available though. I’m honestly at a bit of a loss to understand Intel’s latest offering. But hey, it made us stop laughing about 10nm for a few minutes.

If you’re handy with electricity and don’t mind fracturing a few rules, European kettles work just fine on 240V 60Hz power. A British 13A plug in the kitchen is a nice conversation piece too. Note: because of the US “split phase” system, th

I'm curious to hear from AMD about the L3 cache latency issue. The article shows L3 access just a few ns quicker than going to DRAM, even to the other CCX on the same die. That's ugly! This strikes me as either a bug or a benchmar
