Oh no, not at all! Sure, dealing with the problems of less knowledgeable users is sometimes annoying, because 99% of the problems stem from non-compliant monitors/hubs/docks etc. But nowadays I get weeks at a time where I can do 0

Thank you for the kind words! I haven’t updated my resume for a while because I don’t have a job anymore and I’m serious about not having to get hired ever again. I’ve written about how I quit my job in March last year and started turning L

1. Yes, I’ve been working on generalizing the Lunar specific code for open sourcing it next month. Still WIP because I’m still getting busy with new monitor edge cases. Last month I’ve also found out about Keygen ( https://keygen.

I didn’t know Ruby, and yes, some things had to be figured out through old Ruby knowledge. But that wasn’t as much of a barrier. Every language that gets a little creative will have these features that you probably never saw, have no idea w

I did the licensing server for Lunar ( https://lunar.fyi/ ) in Crystal. It’s been a joy to work with it! The standard library for working with strings, JSON, YAML and XML is top notch. Type safe and extremely fast, very impor

NextDNS is for blocking the site when you access it. It won’t hide it from the search engine results. You still need a browser extension adblocker (uBlock, AdGuard) that can modify the contents of any webpage for this to be effective.

Last year when I was working as a contractor for a US company, I mentioned to my team leader that I’m sick of tech and I really want to close my laptop for the last time ever, go outside and start making wood flutes or something. Instead of

ESPHome (an easy to use firmware for ESP32 chips) uses SSE to send sensor data to subscribers. I made use of that in Lunar ( https://lunar.fyi/#sensor ) to be able to adjust monitor brightness based on ambient light readings

Yes, the system monitors the display temperature and caps the brightness accordingly. Here are some interesting functions I found related to this inside the system frameworks: SkyLight.framework: SLSDisplayIsThermallyLimited

Yes, that’s another way of putting it. But people usually look at this, relative to previous displays, not relative to peak brightness (since the peak brightness is not achievable for prolonged periods of time because of overheating)

They’re not dimming the SDR content. It is an optical illusion. The HDR white is actually a lot brighter than the SDR white (which means the LEDs behind those pixels are allowed to go to full brightness). You can see that effect if you watc

Well most likely because HDR content doesn’t mean full bright white for extended periods of time. Even if you watch 8 hours of HDR content, only some of the LEDs will get to peak brightness for small periods of time. That will allow the LED

Yes, I noticed that sunglasses help, but they still darken the screen a bit because of their tint. This is a video I took last summer on this: https://files.alinpanaitiu.com/ff-polarized-macbook.mp4

I think that long time might not be higher than an hour or two given how much heat the LEDs need to dissipate. A lot of non-technical users might get used to that brightness and then start complaining about their display dimming by itself
