It completely removes the need to handle taxes. Paddle acts as a Merchant-of-Record (kind of like a reseller) so they handle VAT and sales tax in all states for you. I also don't need to invoice them. I just get my monthly payment in m

We think alike :) I’ve used the same strategy to turn Lunar ( https://lunar.fyi ) into a $5k/month business and to have the luxury of not having to sit through an interview or work for someone else in the near future. I like

I'm well aware of that. But I'm also aware that human time is expensive, and paying $25 shouldn't entitle you to someone's time indefinitely. This model is just one of the ways of ensuring that the developer has a consta

The App Store doesn't provide a native way to do trials. They have some convoluted process with a $0 in-app purchase. I'm a macOS and iOS developer myself and constantly struggling with adding trials for App Store apps in a way th

I have the same licensing model in Lunar ( https://lunar.fyi/ ) You buy the app as is now, and you get to keep this version of the app forever. Just like you would buy any other good. On top of that, you also get 1 year of f

Those launch/focus app hotkeys in Karabiner are exactly why I made rcmd ( https://lowtechguys.com/rcmd ) I had a similar setup first in Karabiner, then in BetterTouchTool for easier configurability. But I needed the syst

So this is where I start to lose my mind.. The text previously didn't say lifetime license. That was added because another Lunar user, which was also a previous Apple engineer, didn't understand the model. And after a long discuss

In Lunar's model, lifetime means that you can activate the license forever on the versions released within the 1 year of free updates. The website and app state this everywhere possible, so users that pay must be aware that they'r

Thank you for the thoughtful comment! Why not just charge $23/year? It seems like a fair price I believe you'll get downvoted for this soon unfortunately. People balked at my $23 per lifetime license, I can't imagine

Just wanted to say that I love MacUpdater! It’s focus on usability and getting the app to function with so many types of updaters is what makes it a “classic macOS app” that is always a must-have for me. I work exclusively on desktop apps n

The Pro Display XDR has active cooling (fans) and huge heatsinks so I’d say it’s probably created with this use case in mind. It’s not uncommon for creators to work on HDR content all day long where the nits are not limited.

I've encountered exactly the opposite: https://alinpanaitiu.com/blog/over-500nits-failed/#sdr-cap-i... The SDR nits never go over 500 in my experience. But it's possible I haven't tested this correc

Definitely not :) It's changing the real nits limit of the screen, with the same APIs that the system uses when a HDR video is played.

Well it’s definitely not the advertised use case. The promo videos are mostly made with studio rooms in mind. I’ve yet to see a laptop advertisement where someone is working outside in sunlight.

In terms of the amount of light going into your eyes, my intuition says that you’re getting more nits from a white sheet of paper than from a dark screen with white text (in direct sunlight) But staring into that light for a long time will

It does work properly for code editing. That’s my main use case actually, coding in botanical gardens with lots of sunlight around. It’s so good to not have to squint on that colored text with less contrast.

That’s exactly what it’s made for :) You can finally go outside and work on your laptop in the bright sunlight without squinting! You probably don't do this often, but it's nice to have, right? https://lunar.fy

I’ll open source this feature and do a write up this week. But as a hint, it involves some internal SkyLight.framework and Core Brightness APIs to ramp up the headroom slowly. Here’s my previous failed attempt: https://alinpanait

The goal for having the non-paid parts open source, is to share knowledge. I have to reverse engineer a lot of macOS internals and some hardware too to make some features possible. I don’t want to keep that for myself. This XDR thing makes
