I have seen people store dates in string form, in memory, converting to and from string form as they are updated. It hurts to read code like that.

Two liter bottles are an anomaly. Every other pop container is in ounces. Cans are 16 ounces and bottles are usually 20 ounces. I can't think of a situation where "metric is common" for consumer items.

I recommend some other functional language like Scheme or OCaml. All I got from my time with Haskell was frustration. I read RWH and worked through tutorials. I never got to a point where it didn't seem like the simplest tasks weren't painf

Indiscriminate wiretapping and data gathering is worse than targeted strip searching with probable cause. In the U.S., it's a violation of the Fourth Amendment.

There's a big difference between constructive criticism of genuine problems (such as issues with Apple Maps searching) where you may learn something and the "you're holding it wrong" kinds of comments. I'd go to reddit if I wanted to read a

I've been pretty happy using Mail with GMail set up as an Exchange host in order to get push. I am glad that Google is putting effort into their client. I couldn't figure out how to get the new Gmail to do a real delete instead of an archiv

Voyager did pass Pioneer 10 (1972) in the late 1990s. The alignment mentioned by others made the difference. New Horizons, which is going to Pluto, had the fastest launch speed of any man made object.

Anecdotes like yours don't prove anything. That's why we have science. Without a control group and test group we don't know if your conclusions are statistically valid. Maybe most people get better grades when they watch TV and play video g

My work email is usually HTML which is clumsy to reformat with the precision I had formatting simple text using Emacs+Gnus on Usenet. Normally I'd rather have the transcript of successive emails anyway.
