I find the web programming model to be very difficult and limiting relative to desktop or mobile UI development. I don't take on any development work in that area because it is so unpleasant to me (JavaScript, HTML/CSS, DOM manipu

There is some "flat" design that is similar to Android, but the similarities are fairly superficial and not what the article was addressing.

How does anyone suffer either way? Someone is trying to get more open source out which seems like a good thing for any language.

In the IPhone 5, the glass and digitizer are bonded. Apple charges $149 to replace them. I'm sure it's possible to do it cheaper.

But they're not worried about the fact that more people are seeking political asylum from western countries? Is this our Roman Empire moment?

I think looking at a popular open source project in C++ like LLVM may prove valuable http://llvm.org/docs/CodingStandards.html . Google has a C++ style guide http://google-styleguide.googlecode.com/svn&#

I also have tried to figure out the original reason for hellbanning, and I think there are a lot of instances where you could chalk it all up to a temporary lapse of judgement. Sure there are extreme cases where people are nuts, trolls, or

I lost flag ability recently. I must have overdone it. I had definitely been flagging a lot of non-tech posts that seem better suited for general news sites.

I'm a big fan of the general visual appearance and behaviors of ICS and Jellybean! After Froyo and Gingerbread, it was a relief. With all the Project Butter work, Android has become much better. I wish they would block carriers from me

Well, my personal experience is that things break on different Android devices for various and sundry reasons despite the existence of dp. If apps run on the iOS simulator you rarely find issues on an actual device except performance issues

That is not what he's saying at all. He's saying there is disruption and an opportunity now, not that continued disruption (fragmentation) is a good thing!

It's not even comparable. Android has many more levels of fragmentation than iOS ever will and Google knows that they screwed up. You have display resolution * display density * OS version * carrier OS modifications * device hardware (

Why are people doing so much peer level file sharing anyway? Performance? Security? In a company it would be a lot better to have centralized servers with high availability, probably with some kind of web-based CMS to store files, something

Not sure if this is related, but you often have to declare local variables volatile when using setjmp/longjmp because they do not preserve registers. It's one case where unoptimized C code will run fine, then -O will push variables into reg

I figured someone would make that comment. I'm just giving one example of why this may not be a good engineering decision. It also makes it hard to access or inspect the wheel/tire in general. You can't just optimize for one thing like aero

I'm sure you will find strlen and linear searches too. It's more likely that absolute performance wasn't necessary for those cases, or memory usage with linked lists is better than a more complex data structure, or maybe even that linked li

That's why you use a growth factor, say doubling the backing array when you need to grow. That makes the amortized cost of adding an item constant. The only case where a LL may be preferable are when you care about performance of inserting/

Where's Internet Explorer and Office 2013 for OS X? Which significant Microsoft apps run on iOS? Obviously it makes sense for Google to get its advertising hooks everywhere it can, but I don't see Apple and Microsoft having the same cross-p
