This reminds me of the issue with Dave Carroll http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Breaks_Guitars . As a company, you can't afford to get yourself in conflicts with people who have genuine issues and are savvy with social media.

If anything, you're the one arguing for outdated editors -- editors that are not aware of structure and treat programs like an array of characters, allowing navigation only by the simplest and least efficient means possible.

Spafford's write up is such a hoot. He complains about suboptimal file descriptor closing. Clearly, whoever wrote that worm (that targeted VMS and Unix in one worm, used numerous exploits, probabilistic replication, and required 40 pages of

I was a teenager when this happened. RTM's worm probably started a number of security careers and brought career peak levels of excitement to many of the people involved with analysis. I remember being absolutely astonished that someone wri

Yahoo! needs to regain credibility after Bartz ran it into the ground amid claims of overcompensation. Having someone like Mayer as a public leader with accountability will be a positive thing.

I don't think Amazon in general is a welcome force in the Android world and I doubt many people enjoy submitting apps to both Google Play and Amazon. They are contributing to fragmentation of the platform.

If you enjoy Unix shells, you will probably hate PowerShell. I use a bunch of GNU utilities compiled for Windows that are probably about ten years old. Cygwin is too much effort for an unnatural feeling environment and PowerShell was design

Desktop CPUs are something like 10 times faster than the typical ARM mobile CPU. Plus a desktop would run the higher optimized JVM instead of Dalvik. I'm sure it is challenging to get Minecraft to run at a playable level of performance on m

I was not a big fan of Bill Gates in the 1980s and 1990s. But I think the philanthropic work he has done has been wonderful. Steve Jobs was not philanthropic, to a fault. He preferred to give to society by producing good things. I think Gat

I don't mind clarified headlines, but editorialized headlines bug the heck out of me and they can color the discussion. Today I complained when the title was "Are Placebos Really Sugar Pills? Or Something worse? instead of the original "Are

The blog title is "Are Placebos Really Sugar Pills?". Was "Or Something Worse?" editorialized on? The thrust of the article isn't that placebos are bad, it's that they are inert and not regulated or reported on consistently.

The idea that someone's age prevents them from making good decisions about technology is offensive to me. It's a bullshit argument. Martin Cooper, inventor of the cellphone, was born in 1928.

I would never encourage use of the f* I/O functions from the standard C library for high performance code. They're all buffered which means there's an extra copy happening. You should use read and other POSIX I/O functions instead.

Pie charts are stupid because the shapes you want to compare are rotated in space. You can't distinguish close values. It's better to use a normal bar/column chart where the comparison only occurs in one dimension (height of the bar).
