I should clarify where I got "the Paul Graham route" from: somewhere in the Hackers & Painters book, he wrote about how cheap they were in the beginning of Viaweb, with him coding in an old chair that was falling apart. Sorry I don't ha

Yeah I've been doing fine with my $25 Costco folding chair - I just threw a soft couch pillow on the seat and try to remember to sit up straight. I think an Aeron could actually be annoying on a hardwood floor like I have at home, with the

I'm always split on that - go Joel Spolsky and treat yourself right to an Aeron, or go the Paul Graham route and skimp with a cheapo? I've had nothing but Aerons at work for a few years and my butt kinda misses them now that I work from hom

Not sure how that answers why you need that many systems, sounds like she just needs one beefed up one and a lot of monitors - having extra boxes online to split up the work wouldn't help with Photoshop or her workflow, right?

Yeah I'm with you - I can see the need for two systems, one for real work and the other for all the other crap (email, music, etc) but not 6. I wonder if it's like getting tattoos - once you get more than one, it spirals until you're covere

There's an assumption in this blog post that underpins a lot of semantic web stuff, even the biggies like Powerset: that people can, will and prefer to type out "correct" semantic queries versus simply throwing a few keywords into Google. G

"And so a designer has to learn yet another language for layout?" I've pretty much had to do that already to work with Flash. That's been a pretty limiting sandbox - we've been hearing "next year is the year Flash finally goes big on mobi

I love how the coach's experience and gut feeling aligns so closely to equations by physicists - that if Usain pushed himself to the fullest and the wind conditions were right, he could run close to 9.50 or even a bit below.

Thanks, there's a surprisingly high number of design-related conversations on HN and I'm glad there's a good home for them. It reminds me of what 37signal's blog comments used to be like while they were still a design firm and making a name

I'd say it's one of two keys to clean UIs - the other is once you've grouped logically-related bits together, do a quick bit of research to see how others handle similar functionality. For me, that's what really closes the loop and creates

The converse is true too, when Twitter is up and running just fine. I'm going to think of that every time I tweet - I succeeded at gossiping and failed at working.

Glad to see Jeff blogging about Django again. His initial posts (esp the "Django for designers" one) were one of the few in plain English and a great intro for me at the time, as a designer that had only worked with php and Rails. I've work

That was genuinely inspiring and great timing for me personally. I talked my fiancee into quitting her job this week and she's turning in her notice today, for pretty much the same reasons: life's too short for her to drain her soul away at

Luckily, you can usually just hit "print this article" for a cleaner and single page version of the same article. Nytimes has a single page option in addition to the print version.

Apology accepted and upvoted :) You made a very understandable mistake, the same one that a lot of my friends do whenever I rave about how great New York is. Just because it's the best in several aspects doesn't mean it's the best place to

I don't know why this is on HN either but I'm a sucker for anything NY. It's the most usable and creative city on the planet and big part of it is the perfect grid system of its streets and subways. Wayfinding and transportation is a snap a

This change definitely won't make it a programming language - they're not even real variables, they're more like XSLT's definition of variables. Also known as constants.

Best tip ever Paul - having your own personal website where you can try out new styles, programming techniques or even just write about them is critical for a young designer. Or old ones! I don't use my personal site that much anymore (I'll

This is an awesome little book and a bit of a secret, probably because the title, color scheme of the cover and relative thinness make it look less like something to be seriously and more of a "design for dummies" book. Not at all - it's a
