Thanks for the heads up. I went back and pressed submit several times because in my incognito window my comment didn't show up. (I was trying to post while noprocrast was on, didn't expect something I wrote to hit HN). I wonder no

We compile for 64-bit and 32-bit on every commit with travis CI and for many files activate extra warnings such as `-Wconversion`. We are acutely aware of the problem. However, we can't refactor the entirety of the (quite large) Vim co

Article author here. You're correct. It's new code that's calling into old, unrefactored code. Hence the casts. convert_input() is new, string_convert_ext() is old. As is mentioned in the article, I'm working on a refact

Fantastic blog post! Now I don't have to start digging myself :). I've always thought realloc could do a few optimizations, glad to find out the details.

A bit sad, as a member of a big project on github, I'm sure that "starring" could be a handy way to know what people are interested in. (And avoid a lot of "me too"-comments, from devs and other users alike).

Oh man, there goes my time. I remember FlatOut 1 fondly from when I was a kid and was still using Windows (great soundtrack too, I remember sending No Connection an e-mail and they even replied). Now I couldn't resist buying FlatOut 2,

I had no idea about this, I had mostly assumed that a decent compiler would do this. There is no reason this can't be implemented in the future, right?

With defers and named return values, it is actually possible to alter the return value inside of a defer. I had to do this recently to properly log an error (to abort in the calling code). Also to do with database operations of course: htt

I'm a big fan of Go and have a few Go binaries running on hundreds of clients (and a few servers) right now. They are being managed by Runit though. Since the names are so similar, did you get inspiration from Runit? And if so, what wo

If you would care to look at the code, it is obvious that this is one of the simplest ways to build strlcpy (basically a call to strlen and memcpy and some branching), perhaps I should've said linux kernel-style such that readers famil

We use the linux kernel implementation at neovim. But a libc (and possibly asm optimized) implementation would be nice too (it could avoid two runs over the data). Not that it's likely to be a big improvement, strlen and memcpy are usu

No, I like both gcc and clang, and thus mingw. Still, we would like to be portable to as many modern, often-used compilers as we can. Also anecdotally, I wrote a software renderer a few months ago that ran almost 50% faster when compiled wi

All very well, but I'd be really happy once (if) we ever get proper C99 support in MSVC. We basically need that at the neovim project if we want our code to compile with MSVC. We don't want to compromise either, by for example com

Tests are being added all the time, and patches from upstream Vim integrated. Moreover we do have a reviewing process in place (mostly 2 or more people looking over the code), travis runs, all vim tests + lua unit tests are run for each PR.

I'm thinking that it won't be necessary to split out all plugins into separate processes. One could just as well use one host per scripting language and combine all plugins that use the same scripting language.
