I used to develop something like this (5-6 years ago). By far the best (most stable and performant) solution was the following: - Linux OS (ease of management, installation, introspectability). - Debian (somewhat stripped down), with

When I read the title, I immediately thought of Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne (1864). The flora are described as consisting of "...surrounded by a rocky coastline covered in petrified trees and giant mushrooms"

I remember a discussion with Drew on HN a while ago. I held that the GitHub model was more inviting to small contributions given the overhead of figuring out how to get said small contribution integrated was paid for every new project outsi

I've been trying to read the HTTP2 spec and I can't figure out whether it's allowable to return or modify the HTTP(2) status code in a trailer instead of in the header. After some re-readings, I decided it wasn't allowed

Very entertaining article, thanks for that. I recognized a lot of my own a-ha moments w.r.t eBPF/bcc reading all the sections (especially the kern_version thing). You seem to want to avoid either LLVM (understandable) or run-time compi

This sounds great, especially the fact that v0.2 has much improved throughput over v0.1 in most cases. I must however echo some other posters' sentiments: latency is even more important than throughput, and alacritty's input laten

One thing that seems suspect about this article is when he mentions that nobody else can put a chip like the neural engine in a phone. He says Google does it in the cloud. I don't think he's tried a Google Pixel (2) device before.

It looks like you think that older approaches to open-source collaboration (like many of the GNU projects are using) are more or less as user-friendly as GitHub. I don't have the data to prove that they aren't, just an intuition.

But also fewer contributions, I reckon. If someone wants to contribute something big, they'll jump through all the hoops. But if all one wants is to contribute another example to a man page, I'd wager they're more easily disc

I wonder why you said that Unreal (I assume for the first, single-player, Unreal) was a mediocre engine. AFAIK it was competitive with Quake II and released only a couple of months later. Care to detail?

I'd hope not, and that the nftables (nft) language can be implemented in top of this new infra. It is much easier to use and audit than iptables. EDIT: me, parent and grandparent should've read the article. There's already tw

I remember playing GC1 on a 300Mhz celeron with everything turned down. Needless to say, anything but the easiest single players missions were murder. It ran like a dream on an AMD Athlon 700 with an ATI Radeon 9000 though, when I finally s

This is fantastic. Thanks Massive/Ubisoft. I never played World in Conflict much (though I do have it), but I was a big fan of Ground Control (arguably the pre-predecessor of World in Conflict). It was basically my first online game. T

Yes, yes and yes. We had this issue on the Neovim project a while ago [1]. This caused us to switch workflows [2] (although I would have preferred the --exec approach that you mentioned). Also see comment [3] by TheCorey mentioning you can

Have you reported it to the Neovim devs? It stands a better chance of being included there (IMHO) and from there it's possible that it trickles up (like the async features in Vim 8).
