School could easily be considered a negative social experience. Unnaturally spending 6+ hours/day with kids of the same age under loose social guidance. A home-schooler has his neighborhood and extra-curricular time which are more than

There's some truth in this, but you extrapolate too far. 1) UX is a bigger problem than the lack of financial incentives in the system though the two are related somewhat 2) There are audiences in these ecosystems, and I think monetiza

From what I've seen so far, Activity Pub does allow multiple apps per use so individuals can choose an app of their liking. For example, I'm using Pleroma instead of Mastodon and the interop with Mastodon instances has been seamle

Ultimately we need fewer people in order to preserve the natural world. We can start by disincentivizing and de-emphasizing growth.

Fascinating to see OpenID here. Where do you use it? I thought it was pretty much dead, so implemented IndieAuth recently which does what I want, replacing OpenID’s functionality.

How to run as much Fediverse and and IndieWeb software as I can. I want to understand the entire scope of what is possible today for a fully personal federated cloud, homepage, and social network. Along the way I want to understand what hol

Matrix would be an excellent one to add for the Chat category. Lovely, federated, and has voice/video calling that works great one-on-one.

This is true and remains true, but if it ever changes and the UX becomes un-under-designed, I don't see any reason we can't proceed. Keep an eye on Matrix as they're undergoing a UX revamp and the people working on it are sup

Maybe, but the article needs to talk about that. That is my point. From my own view, I'm using both of those things and it does work, so why would I entertain a slough of new ideas to be started from scratch without seeing a compare an

The author should first discuss what is already out there and working very well. Start with Pleroma (Mastodon) and IndieWeb.

Anyone know how the self-hosting experience is? Also whether it has Activity Pub support? If this reaches it's potential, it would be great if it were part of the Fediverse.

I think you got down-voted for a hyper-politicized tone, but it's hard to find fault in your conclusions. I'd be interested to hear honest efforts to refute the gist here.

Might be a tough pill for some, but ultimately I agree it's the way the industry needs to end up. Consider the architect; he doesn't get to blue-sky wild ass concepts for a building. He has to draw within boundaries of local codes

I'll never forget the SEO consultant who, when I told him I wanted to focus on CTR, told me it was not a factor in ranking. This was many years ago, but it was obvious Google would use it, and it should have been obvious to him too.
