I had the very unfortunate pleasure of being neighbors with HiQ when we shared a coworking space in downtown SF. They were aggressively selling and marketing HR software that alerted employers when their employees updated their LinkedIn pro

Thanks for sharing this. Reading Dave's post the first time, all I could think was "this seems like the most bland, cop-out, vague apology I've ever seen." He didn't list the specifics of what he felt bad about, and

The author's recommendations are certainly apt, though I wonder if he realizes how much of a political nightmare trying to get cities like Berkeley to build more housing is. Berkeley is probably the staunchest NIMBY city of the major B

I, and many other bootstrappers entirely disagree. The only risk you run is missing one year of income, typically. You can uh, usually just get another job.

Do you plan to add presence to GUN? One of the key features that we require from Firebase is the ability to tell the server to delete a key in the event the client disconnects. https://firebase.google.com/docs/reference

I help maintain the unofficial Ruby client for interfacing with the Firebase Database REST API: https://github.com/oscardelben/firebase-ruby I use it on my fairly high-traffic Firebase site and it works well.

Yeah, implementing a new terminal emulator (and a custom shell!) is pretty rough going. I've heard the idea expressed that it's hard to get programmers to use a new code editor, even if you have a killer feature, because they need

I'm not suggesting that at all. I'm saying this project would likely not exist in any form without Electron. If the ideas expressed within are successful enough, realistically speaking people would either: 1. continue using it

I think there is a stunning amount of "resource cynicism" in this thread. Yes, this application uses much more RAM and CPU than a "normal" terminal emulator. The project author is clearly trying to explore other ways tha

I looked through the comments, but I don't think many commentators here are actually saying "I am 100% sure this is wrong". I am mostly hearing "there are a lot of reasons to remain skeptical". NASA certainly is an

I think it's tempting to assume that sentiment expressed here is reflective of the majority - everyone whose use case is served well is happy and likely doesn't comment. As for the "hackers" comment - HN might have "

I don't think I would be so quick to dismiss this sentiment. I run a profitable SaaS business, and every opportunity to give up responsibility results in highly profitable refocusing of effort on the things we do that actually matter

I gave a talk at Dropbox literally about how to start a small business without quitting your day job. A lot of people have told me it was helpful. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/J8UwcyYT3z0 . A lot of my focus was b

Customer acquisition should absolutely only be done by the founder in the beginning. This is the most important part of your fledgling business and one you cannot afford to outsource.

I (and others) are upset at Ruby's normally great messaging being totally absent here. As a lay user of Ruby, I have no idea what changed in this release.

While possible, it doesn't seem advisable. If you could bootstrap a successful SaaS as a solo nonprogrammer, you probably didn't need to.

I think the comparison to Firebase is a bit disingenuous. Their core offering is real-time synchronization of large, arbitrary data structures. From perusing Baqend briefly, it seems like your architecture is much more poll-based.

This looks amazing. One of the biggest pains of using docker is that the storage driver inevitably explodes the system. Is anyone using LCFS in production? Why did you get started building it?
