Fair enough, but I don't think that the FBI conspires to frame people for crimes all that often, nor that many security researchers believe that they do. Also, the fact that a grand jury handed down an indictment indicates that there

Arrest is an early step in a process to prove guilt or acquit. The "burglary" did occur, and a grand jury did examine evidence and determine it was sufficient to start that process.

Addendum: there's also a definition problem with "lecture". Pretty much any educator will tell you that they encourage---actively wish for---questions from and conversations with students during a lecture. Passive lectures w

This is interesting, but it depends on the proposition that "active learning" is clearly better than more traditional education methods. That's not nearly as plain or uncontroversial as the article implies. One issue is that

Why? The arrest of a mall cop who was also doing burglaries wouldn't send a chill through the security guard community, except perhaps for those who were moonlighting as burglars.

I think I'll open with a dubious metaphor I just came up with and a demand that the reader immediately and wholeheartedly accept that metaphor as literal truth. That's how you grab an audience!

No, it could be much worse than that. Law enforcement didn't immediately shut Alphabay down---they let it run compromised for several weeks, gathering evidence. If Hutchins made transactions during that period, he was at signficant ris

Given that the Alphabay takedown (and law enforcement's control of the servers for at least six weeks) was more than a month ago, Huthchins' blithely travelling to the States for Blackhat seems a level of confidence completely at

I'd argue that the latter purpose---allowing the reader to recover the original sources and arguments to your thinking---is more important than the 'giving credit' one. If a conversation or email exchange with someone was in

Money laundering statutes do not require a discrete 'victim' with standing. They simply require the illegal manipulation of funds. In particular, disguising the origin of funds or assisting someone in doing so.
