It’s more than that. Because of advances in technology and science, “productivity” will always increase. But to whom go the spoils? And when will we take responsibility for the losers?

It is absurd to tie productivity to workers. An example suffices. A technician running a pair of horizontal machining centers accomplishes the finish machining of eighty automobile engine blocks in an eight hour shift. Now, he’s replaced

“Discovery shifted from search to app store.” No. The App Store is like going to the dentist.

Why is it so hard to write a translator from Cobol to a modern language? It seems there would be a lot of advantages.

So they fail in entry to yet another market. Time to hunker down into the foundry business.

Around 1988, I added phase shift to my optical thin film design program written in Excel 4.0 for the Mac. At the time, this was utterly unique: each spreadsheet row represented a layer and the matrices describing each layer could be calcula

As a senior with three cars, I’ve looked at this in depth. The inconvenience isn’t worth it until I’m a hazard to myself. So I’m certain it’s unfeasible to prime young workers without a mass transit situation.

At the national labs, you can basically walk out with proprietary technology, as long as it’s not classified, with many modules and processes dual use, where the civilian use has yet to be exploited. I’ve seen this done many times. Proof o

Excellent comment. I’m now 70 and well-to-do. But I was a fool to go into private enterprise with all its interpersonal dishonesty. Government jobs at the national labs had superior NPV’s— the pensions are absurdly expensive taxes on stru

I’d also recommend “Quick Calculus,” by Kleppner. It has helped a lot of people. I would search for an early, used addition, as textbooks tend to get more elaborate and worse pedagogically as they are “improved.”

Finally, let me explain the key to understanding calculus. If you get this, calculus is forever just algebra. (Of course, if you cannot, or are unwilling to DO the algebra, you are lost.) “The derivative of the area under the curve of a f

When I was about 15, I found this one, “Granville,” in a Brooklyn used bookstore: http://djm.cc/library/Elements_Differential_Integral_Calculu... It was terrific, I learned to differentiate well. Now Feynman, at that a

Remarkable creativity. As a kid, I found Wertham’s book in a used bookstore. A plate in the book showed a grizzly baseball game. The catcher used a dismembered, decapitated torso as a chest protector.

I see what you did, and understand your motivations. That said, I think you got off very lightly. I can think of many more causes, other than your art, that would have been more worthy of your skills and the risks taken.

We are talking here about a mature technology. Not a bleeding edge area. Modeling a part, making a drawing of the model, and creating a fabrication strategy and code are all problems solved by multiple competing vendors who interact with c

Not only that, but that is the workflow if you were making a custom bolt on the lathe. Machining experience is invaluable when designing mechanical parts.
