We use traditional paper ballots in Spain, and we have the full results within 2-3h of polls closing. The trick is using a distributed system. Each ballot box is opened, counted and tallied at the same time. The results (along with the vote

I worked with some people who were actively working on this last year, focusing on CS research. The biggest issue was validation. We could get a system to spit out possible research directions automatically, but who decides if they're

Another giveaway of GPT content for me are overusing importance adjectives like "crucial" or "essential", and of course an extreme overuse of enumerations.

The concept of an antimeme has been living rent free in my head (which is quite ironic) ever since I first read this piece back then. Easily my favorite tale from the SCP universe.

I think pointing to powerlifters as an example to what could happen is unreasonable; you wouldn't recommend against people doing cardio on a bike regularly because of how competitive cyclists end up. Very few people who do weight tra

Ah yes, HN's automatic title editorializing strikes again, removing 33% of the title's wordcount and changing it from "click here to see my backup method" to "hey, I do backups".

No, I can see that. It's the same as the logical OR operator | computing unions of sets. I just fail to see how this solution is better than a standard parameterized query, it feels much more opaque without any obvious upsides.

I'd like to use this thread to spread the word of our lord and savior Powerwolf. I discovered them just over two years ago and they immediately became my favorite band: their mix of themes, aesthetic and impressive vocals are amazing.

I agree with this. For example, it leads to weird situations where a linter with a strict type checking configuration marks some code as a type error, but it runs just fine. Which, in turn, leads to you ignoring type errors entirely, since
