At least in London, this has been a problem for 20-30 years. For most young people, buying a house is becoming an impossibility. Supply is increasing, but slowly, and there's a limit on how dense people want to have the city. Demand si

For starting new projects it does 'just work'. Super simple to set up and maintain. Yes, it might not work as well when you start to get more traffic, but for getting setup I have no complaints (aside from this downtime!).

I was just hit by this - can't deploy, can't sign in, and can't access logs via cli tool. Fingers crossed everything is fixed soon.

> do the work first, clean up the commits later I'm not sure this gives the right impression. Yes rename/squash/interactive rebase if necessary to tidy, however I still believe you should strive to create clear, separate c

With these kind of acquisitions, other companies are going to find it very hard to compete with Game Pass. I think we'll look back in 10 years and wonder why antitrust regulators did nothing, but it may be too late by then.

As a (very) amateur photographer, this doesn’t make sense to me. Flashes indoors always look terrible in my experience, and modern smartphones are great in low light.

In summary, it's as you say. Wikileaks has released a tonne of sensitive material which has often made the US look bad and revealed war crimes. The US wants to punish Assange as the leader of Wikileaks to deter others from doing the sa

Yes. You need to look at testing rates, and positive rates to have a meaningful comparison.

Thanks Kevin for writing this up. It's very hard to know the exact circumstances from one side of the story, but I agree wholeheartedly with voicing opinions when important, even if difficult or 'not your place'. And of cours

As a gamer, Discord is great for small/medium social communities where chat is meant to be ephemeral and fleeting, and where voice is important. This is what Discord was designed for and it works great. The problem is that Discord is i

My understanding, from speaking with someone at Facebook who has worked in this area, is that they are primarily empowered to do individual fixes. I.e. they do root cause analysis on why content X was correctly/incorrectly handled, upd

One of the best changes in the last ten years (imo) has been the widespread adoption of code formatters. Particularly those officially supported by the language. It makes reading easier and writing faster. And no more time wasted on pointl

For me these devices look incredible. Can anything come even close to the performance/energy usage of these? And with a great screen, sound, and good webcam? And as an iPhone user, the notch really isn't a big deal. In fact it

I’m gonna add good webcam and sound to the mix. These are essential for remote work. If the rumours are true, the new M1X MacBook Pros being announced this Monday look perfect: - high performance + battery life - exceptional build quality -

Is it possible to prove that one is human on platforms via some kind of zero knowledge proof? i.e. Guaranteed human, while preserving pseudonymity?

I kind of agree. In my last role I ended up in a fantastic place where the teams under me could operate fairly autonomously and were happy. My only recurring meetings were: - 1-1s fortnightly and only with senior members - My 1-1 with my bo

AFAIK, the main blockchains used for NFT trading are either already POS or moving to POS. If you care about climate change, this doesn't feel like a particularly high leverage area to focus on.

Out of the 50 ish devs I've worked with closely, I've seen two I would say are in the '10x' camp. They were relentless in writing solid, simple, bug-free code, and doing so faster than everyone else. They were also effec

I want to challenge the premise of this article. Is there evidence that's it's hard for devs to get a job in general? E.g. The average hiring times for software devs (on popular platforms) in London was on the order of a couple of

I have to agree that the author is somewhat responsible here. Reading it I don't get a strong sense of urgency or ownership. If this work was important, then why wait on another team who give you a "no telling when" reponse?

Main reason is I think it's conceptually simpler. In particular, Liveview is stateful and Hotwire is stateless. I think there are some potential performance benefits of liveview (less sent over the wire and less work done server side)

This looks great however I’m skeptical about dom memoization. VDOM + immutable data structures seems to be much simpler conceptually and may provide even better performance.
