Let me try to draw a picture. Say you have a web based game engine. It is the only game engine as a service in the market which also runs in a browser. Then, a popular open source game engine becomes web based too. Before, you had no compet

You are not taking the whole market into consideration. Maybe they are good at writing the game engine and then hosting, but others may be better at just hosting. So, they could be outcompeted by people who don't want to pay the cost&#

They may be able to respond positively to a threat, but it can still be a threat. It may pay off to try to compose godot's code into theirs, but it may very well be cheaper to just rewrite things within their own framework. Anyway, I&#

Sadly, software is not (usually) that composable. If godot is a better engine all around, it would mean that competitors could offer a better service by just running godot in the cloud and charge per access, which they may be able to do for

Long compilation time can hurt developer productivity as they need to wait longer to test the code they just wrote. It doesn't slow the developer as much as having to write the code themselves, but it's still slower than paying th

Why would someone not want suspending to be enabled if their machine is capable? Why is DBUS, NTP and slim (I don't even know what that one is) not enabled by default when the user signals they want to use xfce? You have to have a lot

Yeah, there are no incentives. No one will praise you for writing them, they will probably not be well maintained and other people will make changes and not update them. People will still ask you privately instead of reading the docs and wi

Fair point, but I really doubt that is really a key component, specially given how fruitfull the developer market is. Very few people stays in the same company for more than 3-4 years in my experience. So, if you're just going to stay

Moreover, it is just like any other code you write. It's undecidable whether a function you write will ever stop in the general case, but I'm pretty sure you are able to easily prove most of your functions are going to finish.

I think there are packages that detect the python version and do some crazy stuff in setup.py. But I think the most responsible thing for a widely used library to do is hold back on using new python features until they are a few years old.

That's not really enough as you depend on libraries you don't own. All the sudden in order to update a small library you use you need to update to a new version of Python. So, yeah, new syntax is always disruptive. My utopia has n

Using ; will not work if you ran set -e before (eg.: if you're using it in a script). Perhaps more importantly, cmd1; cmd2 & will not work either, you'll need a subshell. So, you need at least: ( set +e; cmd1 ; cmd2 ) &. A
