Don't read too seriously into that, as most users of 4chan are loathe to use reddit (and strongly consider reddit to do the same thing that 9gag does).

This was a bad decision. Api change should never be made in 48 hours for a single customer. These are the kinds of decisions you are stuck with for years. Worse, if you ever want to get rid of it, you can't! Good Apis don't slide the ca

We're spoiled with Flash's mature functionality. HTML5 video and audio are still too early in their life cycles to supplant flash. HTML5 also lacks a good way to package a lot of files together into a single one like .sfw's do. I always

What OS? I have noticed that Firefox on Ubuntu (12.04 clean install) looks way worse and feels worse than FF on Windows 7. I feel like Firefox on Windows is still more peppy than Chrome / Firefox on Ubuntu despite my Linux box being way b

Don't do this. It adds almost no extra security and makes it hard for routers that prioritizes port 22 traffic as interactive.

340 bytes is not worth 20x time increase. 0.4% decrease in file size IS worth the time. If you can measure the amount of time it takes to download those last 340 bytes, then you can start to count how many downloads it takes before its wor

That is a good way to never ever ever use a feature again. "Frightening Message: This website wants to do something scary. Do you want to allow some bad thing to happen to your computer?" That is how lay people, i.e. the people needed to

A GAE user sees a problem of his service being slow, writes a frantic bug report with caps and exclamation marks and threatens to leave GAE. As a GAE user myself, two questions come to mind: 1. Is GAE outside of their .9995 SLA* uptime? I

Comment from the WontFix mark: "M/S is deprecated and there is a clear and straightforward path to migrating to HRD." M/S was deprecated April 4, 2012, so it has been some time since the notice has been out there. High replication data sto

I think you are begging the question here: there is an unstated assumption by your use of the word "sample" that everyone's opinion has equivalent weight as everyone else's. Suppose that each persons vote didn't count for just +1 to any op

I have to ask, is there even a practical purpose for this? Is there even some remote screwball application for having to have one machine handle 1,000,000 requests? One of the things I like about coming to HN is that the items on the fron

How do I know if I'm good? If I'm a fresh grad I have no idea if the salary I'm getting is good. Without an objective measure of skill and without knowing how "good" other people are its pretty hard for a greenhorn to know.

How video game porting companies stay in business I do not know. Every story about video game programming seems to involve cutting corners to meet deadlines. With that in mind, porting companies must be handed the most vile and platform s

Being good enough also depends on the context that the video will be used in. For example, I have an HTML5 video site where closer to 100% of the audience is either FF or Chrome. Both support VP8 out of the box, which means I only have to

One of the interesting things about VP8 is that its very similar to h.264 . Saying that one device has hardware support for h.264 really means that it has support for some of the operations that h.264 uses; likely that same ones that VP8 u

"standardizing on a single rendering engine would go a long way towards unifying the web." I would agree, but I don't think it would be a good thing to do. Sure, if there were only one rendering engine, all of the web would be rendered in

Linked lists are good for adding and removing elements. Variable length arrays are good for allocating a known amount of space at runtime.

How did they collect this data without someone raising privacy flags? Releasing this data is almost certainly a bad idea, since it will likely reveal who the people are who made those requests. Anonymized data usually isn't.
