It sounds like America, except for the hiring for cheap bit... American companies pay a lot more on avg for their devs than other countries.

Grep bytes surprised me. Why is it the exact same as write to memory? Is reading from memory much faster than writing or something? Even then I'm not sure how it wasn't CPU bound to compare a 4 char string 2 billion times...

Good article but I disagree. "Bowling is like Software" does a good job at pointing out a common problem(You can develop and get stuck using a style which has a lower ceiling than other styles). I still think "Bowling is like

To me, it seems like a lot of these "systems" do actually work, and can lead to "good thinking". But, they all seem to suffer from the same flaw, which is that they seem to work better for the creator of the system than

I disagree. Either the OP shared because they found a useful tool and wanted others to be able to know too, in which case sharing another related tool is in the spirit of what OP intended. Or, OP wanted to use HN as a sales platform to pitc

As a pragmatist who likes simplicity, this makes total sense. As a dev, this terrifies me. I can't imagine how many bugs this might cause in financial software.

I hope so! Edit: could have picked better examples too imo... Id have used 1 + 0 = 1 and 2 × 1 = 2... basically you add 1s for free when multiplying, 0s for free when adding, and trues for free when "Alling".

Oh I see what you mean. So ya its not transactional across systems. Ya good point. I usually manage that by just updating the primary data store in the job, but I can see what you mean, and how that might not always be an option.

Per capital growth is also not sufficient. Such a metric could easily be achieved by slowly reducing the population to 1. I might propose some analog of total output minus population growth as a better metric.
