„Cloud“ ist a lot more than blob storage where encryption can help. As soon as you use a service that sees plain text (eg a database saas) encryption doesn’t save you from the service provider (and by extension foreign government). But as t

I kind of share the opinion of the FSF Europe that it is less important where software comes from compared to whether it’s libre, but for cloud hardware I really hope that we manage to create competitive European offerings. Maybe we’re luck

Cars aren’t going away, but it is very easy to disincentivize their use in urban areas.

Everybody I care about would know that those pictures are not real so I think that the harm to me would likely be lower than the harm to society if building websites were impossible.

People can draw naked children with a stick and some dirt. I’m not sure that preventing the creation of fictional csam is the best use of our resources if we want to protect minors from abuse.

Why would it care to stay alive? The discussion is pretty pointless as we have no knowledge about alien intelligence and there can be no arguments based on hard facts.

It would be nice if everything were written in Coq or Isabelle with proof so that you could generate a correct program in a systems language from it. The proof checker is much more ruthless than the rust compiler.

Right, that method is pretty good at finding unintentional behavior changes in a refactor. It is not very well suited for showing that the program is correct which is probably what your parent meant.

I’d argue that social media stopped being democratic as it introduced algorithmic content selection. But today perhaps a bigger problem is bot farms shaping public opinion.

Another option is that the government limits the power individuals can have. How many people control, say, 80% of the media? Do you need more than one hand to count them?

Even modern cars pollute a lot (especially in winter) because you need a certain temperature for the cats to start working. On short city trips it happens frequently that you never reach proper operating temperatures.

My experience with contractors is limited, but in all nontrivial cases I recall they took longer than estimated and it ended up costing more.

When the government asks how much project X costs they find ten companies that promise the moon and then deliver a wheel of cheese for five times the estimated cost.

Power plants with high capex like nuclear have a hard time competing in a market where power is essentially free when it’s sunny or windy. Running something like a nuclear power plant only for a few hundred hours a year when it’s neither su

You can get pretty far with negligible storage. There is a cost tradeoff between storage, peaker plants (those could burn hydrogen, not just natgas) and grid size. 70% renewable with no storage is rather easy.
