Ignoring the Oz comment I agree. I wish I could see San Francisco or mental health articles and read comments with similar quality as the tech stuff. Anytime psychiatry is mentioned there’s 100’s of parrots claiming SSRIs are a scam

Coming from Swift development I first missed having a collection of assertion functions for testing, but I've come around to the go testing patterns. I do think test assertion libraries usually result in less useful messages, and you e

I'm also on Concerta, taking 45mg. I started at 27 which was too low for me and went up to 54 which was too high; so we came down to 45 which seems to be a Goldie locks for me (they don't make a 45mg pill so I take an 18 and a 27)

I’m not disparaging it; I think it’s great that languages have new constructs making certain FP patterns obsolete

When it’s an internal tool you can’t google it. You search through internal wikis that haven’t been updated in years

Amazon's internal tooling really is the ninth circle of hell. It seems unsalvageable too; ostensibly the teams are supposed to be customer obsessed and the developers are the customer, but there's no accountability for anything to

I wonder if the return of value semantics in languages lessens the appeal of FP. Localized mutation lets you manage side-effects but you don’t need to bring in an esoteric discipline of math to harness it.

That only works if a function is returning a pointer though, so I don't think it's right to say "most google code." Any function returning a string or any struct by value that can fail doesn't return nil

This article reads like something from 2010. Other than Go, new languages no longer have null references and you don’t need a purely functional language to do so. I kept waiting for more examples for why we need FP but the article yada-yada

I just don't think you can provide an accurate view by working a job like this for six weeks and leaving right as it starts getting bad. I also think it is fair to dismiss anyone with millions in the bank who reports about their stints

I’m with the GP that there’s still a chance for Swift on other platforms. The server-side workgroup seems to be stabling SwiftNIO; so it’s at least being worked on. I don’t really agree that macros make or break a language though. And swift

I'm surprised how many old games are on here. I think a common refrain is how high development costs have become, but except the outliers, Cyberpunk 2077 and Star Citizen, there doesn't look to be a big development cost difference

I think the semantics of NIMBY got lost recently where I’ve read tweets about YIMBY’s who are against building that effects them. People forgot the acronym NIMBY refers to people in favor of liberal policy until it affects them.
