I wonder if the return of value semantics in languages lessens the appeal of FP. Localized mutation lets you manage side-effects but you don’t need to bring in an esoteric discipline of math to harness it.

How do you know if you're doing localised mutation? Rust and Haskell are the only languages I know which help with this.

  I was thinking of Rust, yes, but also Swift which has less restrictions on ownership but still requires exclusive access to modifying variables
