People are downvoting but the GP's point does not really have anything to do with type systems. I think this example is closer to macro expansion than a typesystem.

I don't think it's merely small librarys. Last I checked localization in Elm was a pain, and I'm sure there are numerous other features missing.

What's this higher reason? Isn't the point to crank out business code?

One nit-pick in the generics overview. It claims Swift introduced generics in Swift 4, but parametric polymorphism has been in the language since Swift 1, though refined after each subsequent release.

The proposal doesn't provide a motivation other than Objective-C has them. Is there any API design that is improved by optional protocol members? It seems to me that if you're adding optional members to implement, your protocol or

Yeah, Swift should only contribute a small, constant amount to account for the runtime and standard library. 3-4x doesn't make sense.

I think you're confusing higher-kinded types with type classes. You're right that neither has type classes.

That's not the real sieve, though. It doesn't cross off pre-visited primes and is incredibly inefficient. Try finding just the 19th prime. Here is the paper on the real sieve, https://www.cs.hmc.edu/~oneill/pa

Is this actually the case? I'd assume that Scala has the same dynamic nature as Java, and so AOT won't be able to convert dynamic dispatch to static as frequently.

One advantage ML has over Haskell is that it's not opinionated on how one manages effects. How effects are managed in ML is a design decision by a library author, whether that be monadic or eff-style or sprinkling a printf here and the

Then why not have both? Applicative Functors have both `fmap` and `<$>`. `>>=` could easily be an alias of `flatMap` or `bind` or whatever.
