Well that's kind of the point--there isn't a better way in Linux, but that doesn't mean there isn't a better way to do it in general. Apt was designed I think mainly as a workaround for Linux dependency hell, with the side effect of it bei

Too bad. PPAs are still too esoteric for normal use and waiting 6 months for the latest versions which often include important usability and bug fixes is way too long a time. I know some people think apt-get is the holy grail of Linux sof

A nice quote, but we've already given the TSA a lot. Now it's a fight to get it back. Hopefully it's not too late.

I think that Customs may detain you at a border--they have more leeway in the Constitution for border searches iirc. That's what I'm confused about now, because with each new insane agency that gets created and each new law that alters a

Oh wow, I had no idea they scan you after re-entering the country. I'm flying to Chicago O'Hare from London Gatwick on Dec 2, and now I'm concerned about this. Does anyone know precisely what my rights are as a US citizen upon re-entering

This reminds me of when one of my good friends came back from China with a knockoff iPhone. I bought his extra one off him for $50 out of sheer curiosity. Everything this article said about the knockoff tablet vs. the real thing was true

That looks incredibly cool, and must have been so much fun to work on. I could imagine someone making a homebrew version with maybe a few year's tinkering in a garage and with a compiler.

I'm curious about this too. I've been toying with starting an ad network in my niche as well, but I'm still not sure if I want to head in that direction because I don't know enough about the process.

scribophile.com is paying my salary right now. Not as much as working as a developer at a big company, but enough to live, and I'm much happier :) Completely bootstrapped. The only cash I put down was $100 for some small graphic design wo

This is why I hired an accountant to do this for me. I just don't have the time to research all the gotcha's for incorporating, and I didn't want to risk making a mistake if my research isn't 100%. It costs a little more but it's worth it

The most interesting thing in this article is the reference to "Ultimate physical limits to computation." It's something I never thought about before and honestly it kind of blew my mind a little bit...

This is more or less what I did with my site, Scribophile. The site is based on writers critiquing the writing of others, with a point system to make sure everyone gets critiques. When I just started, it was kind of a chicken-and-egg prob

At the risk of sounding cynical or aloof, I think the times when rational debate shaped the political climate and real-world policies of this country have long gone. It might be time for intelligent people to take a cue from Fox News and (

It's all pretty easy. Every country seems to have their Craigslist equivalent where you can find apartments to stay in for a short term (a month or two). I've spent a lot of time in hostels in the past, which are a fun and cheap way to li

Nothing. That's why I left. Some folks like the SF nightlife scene but I wasn't a big fan of that either. Too many hipsters. Plus it's impossible at nights because of the lack of transport back to the south bay.

I don't know... how often will one be taking exams as an official PhD holder? Exams are sometimes better at measuring how one takes exams than what one knows. Take job interviews for example. I hold a CS degree from a major university and

I travel a lot and the space and weight saved by not having an optical drive would be great for me. In fact I'm shopping for a new laptop now (though not a Mac) and finding a reasonably-priced 14-incher without an optical drive is tough.

Hasn't this been a bug for years? I think it has something to do with the core theming system making it difficult/impossible to do, so while it appears to be a minor bug it's actually a very deep problem.
