So what is the hack that keeps us from constantly taking our luxuries for granted? Just as with the traffic situation, how often do we find ourselves complaining about having to do the laundry or the dishes or vacuuming or even heating up s

The batteries come with long warranties. Even early Honda Civic Hybrid models from 2005 had 8 year warranties and a lawsuit extended that to 9-10 years. Prius batteries are, anecdotally at least, lasting even longer. I would imagine there&#

No -- An attitude of "someone on HN says 'vaccines may not always be safe'" is not real science. Unless you want to provide any actual studies to back up your claim, you're just spouting the sort of pseudoscience th

Not sure why "for Men" matters. A better washing machine UI in general would probably be beneficial to anyone using it (assuming that the temperature and speed differences actually make a difference in the outcomes).

Thanks, it's helpful to consider it from that perspective -- at least as potential reasoning for why the bill was written in the first place. But we can counter that it's specious to claim customers are clamoring for this but not

If you live in the state of CA and think this bill is a bad idea, you can look up your representative senator and send them an email asking that they vote against the bill. http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/

Serious question, not rhetorical: Is there any precedent for forcing manufacturers to modify their product simply to prevent the product from getting stolen? Cars and houses can have alarms, and customers decide whether they need them or no

In the age of plastic, wood becomes unique and interesting. I'd love to see more components made with a beautiful wood casing rather than unfriendly plastic.

I used to write for Wired News. I once took an afternoon to attend a home building convention just to see if, by chance, there was some new technology being showcased that I could write about. There wasn't. And the next day I was stron

The welfare of animals isn't really a minute problem. It's ok to want more info on how the cats are selected and treated for what is ultimately a publicity stunt.

Why does the author of the article take $1.5 million in funding and somehow turn that into "$1.5 million in pre-orders"? Or do they actually have $1.5M in pre-orders in addition to funding for the business?

Financial disasters like the one in the US in 2008 affect the entire globe, not only the US. If the country is morally unfit for advanced banking, then no advanced banking should occur there, period. ... ?

Yes, and when the new Eastern span of the Bay Bridge was proposed, it too was cheap and fast: less than $1B. The dramatic difference in the actual cost has a lot to do with the mayors of nearby cities pushing for a much fancier and complex
