In LA you calculate the normal of a plane by taking the cross product of two vectors lying in that plane. If you transform all three with the same matrix the normal will in the general case no longer be the cross product of the transformed

My (not quite serious) hope is that this will kill x86. After all every other architecture it ever supported died a mysterious death.

Very cool. I immediately recognized this procedural city as Berlin. Guess it's working pretty well.

Page sizes on the PDP-11 are 8kb. Its successor the VAX had 512b pages. I don't think there's any PDP-11 heritage there. The filesystem organzation has more to do with disk sizes than the pdp-11. Also the pdp-11 wasn't a micr

I think the author has never read pre-structured code. Today all we know is structured...apart from an occasional goto maybe.

Not to forget the i860 and Pentium 4. Intel really has a great track record of total failures.

Written by the woman who implemented the ao (add one) instruction on the Whirlwind I!

I haven't tested it much but I did this a while ago: https://github.com/aap/l15 Unfortunately there is no compiler (yet?) but otherwise I implemented most of what is described in the manual.

Simply one of the best computer books I know. I think this (or something similar to it) is the language all those toy-lisp projects should implement instead of something super minimal. It's actually useful and you learn about how lisp

The Berlin ſʒ is indeed what parent was referring to....unless he meant Bonn, where a very similar font is used. Would be interesting to know if a font like this is used elsewhere too.

Certainly not. The first emacs was created for the TECO editor on ITS by various people. It was further developed and maintained by RMS. Gosling's emacs came a few years later.

There is a difference between architecture and implementation. The 68000 ISA (i.e. the architecture) is 32 bits, the actual 68000 chip is not.

I think I complained to you when you posted this before that there is no actual addition in the code. consck is just loaded into ac3 but the code that sets it isn't there.

The characters are not actually stored as rasters though. There are up,down, left, right, intensify and end signals that control the beam and the logic and no more than 30 pulses per character. In fact, I took photos of the "ROM" ear

Just beautiful. I think we still have quite a bit to learn from older approaches to using computers. I love how they're writing IBM 360 assembly on virtual IBM cards.

The one on page 13 is not what LISP 1.5 does, that's more of an earlier purer idea. I meant the one on page 70 where FUNCTION packs a fucking together with its environment into a FUNARG closure, which when applied unpacks the environme

LISP 1.5 as described in the manual implements lexical scope, at least in the interpreter. I haven't studied the compiler too closely, I think there dynamic scope is more prevalent, but as far as I know it has lexical scope as well.

I have to say I'm not an expert on the DEC OSes, so I won't pretend to know the exact timeline, but the PDP-6 was not a very popular machine, only 23 or so sold. So I would assume it's really PDP-10 TOPS-10 that was the inspi
