TOPS-10 was DEC's first operating system, that's where the inspiration for other OSes came from. Not the other way around.

Probably TOPS-10, or rather the PDP-6 Monitor (which later was renamed TOPS-10)

The author argues that the people at Microsoft were very familiar with TOPS-10 (which is not TENEX btw) and in any case the PDP-8 and -11 OSes would have been inspired by TOPS-10, so you're back to TOPS-10 again.

Oh great that this found a new home. I was concerned that it would be scrapped when I saw the ebay listing.

Why do you say the scope on the WWI wasn't a useful device? They even had a camera watching the scope to take photos (controlled by the computer) at interesting times.

I'd just like to see a concrete example for once.

Using strings for tokens is probably not how you would ever do this in C. Make the tokens enums.

I was actually more looking for practical issues. Usually the code that I write doesn't even handle strings a lot. Maybe I'm just using other languages for when I do that or maybe I'm using other approaches where others would

More often that not I find myself missing C-type strings in other languages. Being able to just walk through the characters and manipulating them is something I found rather ugly in python for instance. The NUL character is in my experience

I never really got that complaint, I'd like to see some examples of what people consider so ugly about C strings.

I don't like how people on the internet hate on C all the time. To me C is a wonderfully simple and elegant language that I can most of the time very clearly express my thoughts in. I find that this not the case with many other languag

Woah, I never read that before. The PDP-2 never happened and the PDP-3 was a 36 bit PDP-1 design only built once by a customer of DEC. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

If you want to talk about 36 bits PDPs, join us on #pdp-10 on freenode :) Other PDPs and lispms are also welcome topics.

This is great! And it makes me feel bad for not finishing my FPGA PDP-6 and -10 projects.

Very cool. I've been meaning to convert 9hist to some version control system too for some time but never got around to it. Glad somebody else did.

I was there in 2009 and 2014 or so and I found it extremely boring. It was meant only for business people, not the general public.

Calling this a lisp is a bit of a stretch. S-expressions aren't lisp if they don't have lisp semantics.

If the loop is so useless, why is it in the code? Probably because it isn't useless. Hence the compiler should not optimize it.
