Never going to happen. Welcome to a complex adaptive system that is SEO where you can never rewind history to pinpoint exactly what you did to get a result. At least not any more than an economist can tell you anything.

There's a big difference between what you're critiquing (marketing messaging) and what blackhats are focused on manipulating (links). Your diagnosis, "if you can't make insurance or incontinence products sexy you're in the wrong game," woul

i don't think it's just envy that makes entrepreneurs mad. CL is also quite litigious (but in a hypocritical capricious way), which is generally out of step with the rest of data-is-free, api-driven world.

seriously??? can your mom successfully post and ad on CL, including verifying her email? and can she bold the important words in the ad? even the newspaper classifieds, as dumb as they were, made that easy for the most basic user.

tl;dr search engines reframe the types of questions we ask. And prior to the Internet, the physical limits of information didn't equally determine the types of questions we asked?

that's par for the course with SEOBook. Aaron is brilliant, but his commentaries are never direct. For example, read some of the stuff he's written about eHow-- it's hard to tell if he loves them or hates Google, and ultimately where he c

FeeFighters is doing a bang up job with link bait. They will start to reap the rewards in 12-18 mos. It seems like the people who dislike SEO either a) high a high burn rate and can't wait 18 mos to get a payoff, or b) have investors who c

Actually, the point about selling a bootstrapped venture was that you'd presumably do it early in your career (hence the low price) so it's an accomplishment for the resume, the same way Stanford and HBS are. My argument was that Stanford a

In my experience, the problem is the investors. Most investors in startups can't stomach the unpredictability, in timing OR payoff of investments in SEO. In my case, it took 5 years of bootstrapping to hit 1M uniques per month from organic

Really interested WHY eHow wasn't hit harder, especially compared to Wisegeek. Maybe eHow tends to rank for more obscure, less competitive stuff than Wisegeek... So the more search volume for a keyword, the more the algo punishes a content

"why did startups raise so much VC at the end of the 1990s" VCs pushed them hard to get users at any cost and ipo, since you could do so easily without profits.
