Cloud providers (especially Amazon) can definitely be a bit greedy / shady about pricing and lock-in, but the key thing is that they have room to lower prices whereas a bespoke data center does not. Most data center machines run at a t

This is why I only use .com and .{country code of stable country, like iceland}, as the likelihood of shenanigans on these is so low. .io definitely is one of those cool CS street cred domains, but 2x- or 3xing the price is just ridiculous

Yes I'm so glad this guy posted, as I think removing myself from brokers is somehow less fun than doing my taxes, bordering on trying to negotiate a car deal during 'rona times!

Do most people ask that their vehicle carry furniture and appliances on a regular basis? Honestly any time I have a larger item either being hauled to my place or away from it, it's someone else's vehicle, e.g. delivery of a new a

What 4-cylinder crossover is getting mid-20s (at least hwy mpg)? Certainly a lot of these lil crossovers with natural-aspirated 4-cylinder engines can really strain to heft a bigger vehicle up from a stop (I'm looking at you, Subaru!),

A couple of things come to mind that I'm struggling with now: 1. how to install outside of NixOS, mostly to use home-manager, in a flake-y way using the new `nix profile` thing that supercedes nix-env. The few folks I've spoken to

How portable is an app using serverless? With VMs (and especially containers / k8s stuff), you can just pick up the whole app and ship it off to another cloud provider (except if one uses custom offerings). Can serverless functions be

I see a lot of fellow millenials thinking that the only way to escape the poverty trap that is being chronically burdened by onerous rent payments is to "play the game", i.e. to do all of the house hacking stuff to by MFUs, live-i

Yes, a common construction are these five-over-ones, with a steel-reinforced concrete first floor (for retail) and then wood framed 5-story apartments above. This podcast goes over what an absolute disaster this type of construction is [0],

Ultimately this comes down to the communities. The Emacs community, although perhaps lacking the sheer number of vscode users, is incredible. There are folks like Henrik Lissner who are almost pathologically addicted to making Emacs awesome
