I'm so optimistic about this, especially in the context of local-first web applications. With Postgres on both the client and the server, and something like PowerSync or ElectricSQL to keep the two together, you get a homomorphic datab

It's the larger point. A device with a 64-bit SoC, higher-than-HD display, battery, gigabytes of RAM and storage being consigned to landfill is bonkers.

This looks like a solidly built app, but having used React Native to ship production apps I really don't think its the way forward – nor spending development effort on making apps "look native" with Liquid Glass and the like.

Yeah that's one potential route they could take - repurposing the existing M1 air shell and components. But I actually believe they'll do a completely new shell for this device, and one reason being they could probably save even m

There is a gap in Apple's offerings. Casual computer users like students probably can't justify dropping nearly a K on a MacBook, so they go for these 400-600$ dell/hp laptops, or a Chromebook. This fits that hole. iPhone pro

This is super cool, but I wonder what the application might be. I can imagine wanting to use it to pepper in 3D elements into an existing RN app, but surely embedding the entire Godot engine is kinda heavy? Then I can imagine wanting to emb

I think I got as far as installing the Visual Studio Installer so I could install Visual Studio and I just bailed on that whole thing, lol. I'll have to take some time out on a weekend to take another look :)

I have waited for this for months... but it's still only an x86_64 binary! I love my ARM Surface Pro, and Zed would make a wonderful editor on this hardware. If anyone from Zed is reading this, please think about it!

If we do, we need to draw clear distinctions between different kinds of AI-driven development. What % of human intervention was there? A module written for me by AI, that was tightly specced with function signatures and behaviour cases, is

I totally see what you mean - with minified js bundles and mobile walled gardens we've probably already been in that stage for a good ten years - and AI-driven development that we don't even monitor is likely going to make that wo

I took virtual reality in this case to mean coaxing the text model into pretending it's talking about drugs in the context of the game, not graphical VR.

Imo any kind of p2p mobile app is DOA without background activity on iOS. But i'm also firmly in conviction that p2p is the future, so i don't know how we get there. regulators getting on Apple's ass again?

Everybody is talking about how dystopian this is, which... well, yeah. That's kind of the point, no? But at first seeing this, I unironically felt joy at the idea of being able to directly communicate with somebody real on the inte

I think it's a little more like... Feed your neighbours, understanding the blessing of grain came only from God, and seeking to share and extend that blessing, rather than hoarding it away for self-preservation.

Would be fun to plug this up to an LLM and see how absolutely unhinged it lets itself go over long runs.

Alexa has integrations with a bunch of third party services - Uber, smart home, etc. - not to mention Amazon shopping, and Alexa+ taps into that preexisting wide ecosystem. So as an agent it's already a lot more effective than ChatGPT

I’m not sure how political HN is allowed to get - but since this post is here, I’ll bite… So it was found that an extra £20 payment to state benefit claimants sharply reduced the usage of food banks. Yet, the UK government has invested £60

It worked for me. I got a Raspberry Pi when I was 12. I learned the Linux command line on it. I built doorbells and game sites to use in school. I learned PHP on the thing, my first proper programming language. Good times. :)

Give TotalFinder a go. Works on latest macOS on M1 chips. You do need to change the SIP policy to get it working, but you can fine tune it so that TotalFinder has the permissions it needs while preserving security elsewhere in the system. O
