Apple hates offering choices. But yes this would be the obvious option. Though in this particular case I don't really care but I can imagine some people would. It's also not really nice to change this in a point-update. UI changes

Well, obviously cyclists are more vulnerable. Considering that the numbers are pretty low IMO. The Netherlands have 16 million people, most of which use bicycles for daily travel. 200 died in a year, especially elderly who are exceptionally

In the Netherlands we're doing fine without them though. Nobody wears one on a regular bike. I've had a few times where I slipped so fast I didn't even remember what happened but every time my arm was there protecting my head

Well, Canonical does, to be fair. They just seem to be unsuccessful at gaining adoption. Part of this is my suspicion that they just do it to get their IP on the map (like with the snap store that only they can manage). But I would imagine

The lock-in makes it impossible for me to use most of their services though. I need to access all my stuff on Mac but also on Windows and Linux. I wish there was a good privacy-embracing cloud platform that I could just pay for directly ins

I always thought it was written with the surveillance tendencies of the Soviet union and their vassal states in mind, in particular the DDR. After all, animal farm was also targeted at communism and how it corrupts itself.

Even with thread reader this looks still really ranty and choppy. All the isolated sentences, the all-caps parts etc. But it's ok, not everyone likes every type of content. It sounds like a pain having ADHD though.

Thanks, I thought I knew all the major mesh VPN options (tinc, nebula, tailscale, zero tier, hamachi) and yet I never heard of yggdrasil. This is the kind of comment I love HN for!

XML and its associated formats were just so complex. I remember considering getting a book on XML and it was 4 inches thick. Just for a text-based data storage format... This is just prohibitively complex. Formats like JSON and YAML thrive

Can confirm in Europe. We don't even get taught much spin recovery, just spin avoidance, seeing that a spin can't be recovered from within final altitudes anyway

Homebrew for Mac is super popular among developers: https://brew.sh/ And yeah they should know better. On the other hand, modern programming languages also pull libraries from all over the place without any serious vetting.

This is the #1 thing they teach you in lockpicking class anyway. If you want to burgle, buy a crowbar or in this case a drill. It even doubles as a weapon, they will say jokingly. Though I imagine burglars will actually think that way. Lock

The pins would have to be fairly far apart to not be affected by each others' magnets I think. Also, this would be pretty easy to 'brute force' with a special key with some electromagnet coils. With physical tumblers this is

I was considering 100k including everything :) Here in Spain (which is a first-world country :) a good dev would make about 50k or so.. I think the Silicon Valley area has really skewed expectations of salary (and of course living expenses!

Looking at the reviews this has been a running joke for a while. Wonder what started it? Was the location featured in one of those "hunting Hitler" documentaries or something?

Which reinforces the idea that the decision to let it spread here was a good one I think. We have more than enough vaccines and it looks like the exposure helps too. China's policy may work against them if that's the case.

True, I got covid 2 weeks after getting my booster (3rd mRNA dose). At a point where protection should have been optimal. However it only gave me slight sniffles for 2 days. The vaccine made me more sick :) so IMO the vaccine did its job. I

I wish there was a good high density client for matrix. Like an IRC client. All the ones I've seen emulate Whatsapp and signal. Big avatars, lots of spacing everywhere. This doesn't work well if you bridge lots of other networks w

Yeah I know Rhide! I didn't know it was still maintained, I thought it was deprecated in 2002. It used to peg my cpu to 100% though back in the day when I used it. Hope they fixed that. But I'd love something more modern.

At least in the windows 2000 time every app was using the same UI toolkit. That helped a lot What made some stuff hard was that there were not many pixels available for icons due to the more resolutions in those days, which made icons hard
