If the Deck takes off, we will see lots of other handhelds following the same blueprint too.

Yes, but the vast majority of games on Linux now run through WINE and the world is moving to Wayland. (notably Valve's Gamescope which will be used in the Steam Deck[0]). [0] https://github.com/Plagman/gamescope

I mean that's fair. I think even getting to Windows parity, warts and all, would be good.

It's on a per-case basis I think. I will call it 'ready' when I can pick up a Linux PC or a Steam Deck off of the shelf with zero fiddling, install and boot up a {Steam, Multiplayer, Non-Steam, comes-with-own-launcher-on-PC}

Along with Proton, Steam Play, the Steam Deck, Easy Anti-Cheat support for Wine, Battleye suppport for wine, FSR and a bunch of other stuff, this means that gaming is getting more viable on Linux. It isn't there yet , but it's cl

You feel that opposition to people being unpleasant assholes is part of a current trend? Have you not considered that you may just be an asshole?

It's also worth noting that you said 'plenty' which is absolutely true. A rounding error for Windows install base would be a significant increase in Linux market share, and that is the sorts of levels I would anticipate with

But Linux market share has increased consistently since Proton was released (0.7% -> 1.3%), and the Steam Deck hasn't even been released yet. If the stats showed stagnation or decline I would agree with you, but they seem to be sugg

Could you expand on that? I don't see the situations as being directly comparable at all. Maybe in technology terms, but the situational context is completely different as far as I can see it, especially as it pertains to Linux share o

But the case being argued is demand for the Steam Deck which is demonstrably high. The counter point to that was that production was low, therefore selling out doesn't mean much. However, the Steam Machines didn't sell out at all

The recent Linux Challenge [0] on Linus Tech Tips has helped raise Linux's profile for gaming. Linus Sebastian's enthusiasm for the upcoming Steam Deck has really raised the channel's appetite for Linux Content and as such is

Asking some developers to remove a native version of their game is not the same as asking all developers to target Proton. If anything it's more an indictment of those specific dev's ability to target native Linux.
