I loved Dan Lyons fake Steve Job columns, but Disrupted didn't work for me at all. He presented himself as the lone adult in a sea of misfit children, but came across as a clueless and bitter crank. The same (admittedly keen) observati

I'm using $15/hr and $7.25/hr in "value" for convenience here (though I didn't make that clear). Really, I mean $15/hr plus benefits + overhead + margin. But, to my argument, I think that jobs will have

Presumably you don't have extra staff; you have the amount of (relatively unskilled) staff that can (and will) do the job in the time allotted. As soon as you have to pay them more, you expect more from them. The workers that can

You're staking out a pretty extreme position there. Society has already accepted: helmet laws, seatbelt laws, mandatory health insurance, age limits for alcohol and tobacco consumption, food and drug regulations, etc. You can argue tha

$5/mo seems high to me, but that's irrelevant. I'd happily pay it, if this could be a replacement for Facebook. But it can't, because $5/mo would be insanely high to most of my friends, many of whom decide what th

Yes. A character falls to their death off a "cliff" that would be imperceptible to humans. Another striking feature from the novels, not mentioned in the article but hinted at in the illustration, is the extremely strong magnetic

I love these books (Dragon's Egg and Starquake). Robert Forward isn't great with the human characters, but they're only in a handful of scenes. He really brings the cheela to life, and the speculative physics is outstanding.

Possibly. It was 20 years ago. I'm reconstructing via my (possibly flawed) understanding of the linked article. (My vague recollection was something like 250 digits for a 4-digit passcode.) And I just realized I mistakenly conflated 5-

I was introduced to this idea on the comp.risks forum, where it was presented as an attack on an answering machine with a 5-digit passcode, which, naively, would require an average of 50,000 guesses of 5 digits each, or 250,000 key presses.

Never trust the client of a client-server system (not the client that hired the programmer). The server needs to own the truth. He was able to hack the app because the wallet was stored locally.

Yeah, this framing is really odd. FFS, I don't want any "content," serious or otherwise, in my feed. Just the original, first-person posts and photos of my friends.

Yes. The word "clone" has been so abused by popular media that people have wild misconceptions and objections. We should call them "elective identical twins."

Quotas really are everywhere in real life too, but, as you say, they are paired with word limits. Writing to a particular length is an important skill for professional writers. Novels, non-fiction books, short stories, magazine articles, ne

Specifically with regard to smoking, I imagine if you can go one day without smoking, you're probably not chain-smoking the other six days. You have to adjust your habit so that it's not onerous to go without for a 24-hour perio

I did the trans-Mongolian train (Beijing to Moscow through Mongolia). The first bit is well worth it. The back half (Irkutsk to Moscow) is days and days of unrelieved boredom, with no stops longer than 10 minutes and no scenery.
