You can't customize the "system image", but you can certainly write an application that removes the official App Store and only allows installation from the custom "store".

I cannot find anything on it, via Google or in the Apple documentation. I also talked to the authors of some of the recent jailbreaks today, and at least a few of them didn't know anything about this.

Is this an argument for prototype-based programming? I don't understand all this stuff well enough to provide a real opinion, but it seems to me that is a solution to the issues he brings up.

Good point. I misread that. RAGE works on all the iPhones that support iOS 4, which excludes the original iPhone and iPod touch. However, the hardware on those are reasonably identical to the second generation of devices, so that restrictio

The other issue is that there is no "Android Hardware" -- the older or lower-end devices might not be able to power it. Then, though, it would only support a subset of the devices, and the more expensive ones at that, and Id is blamed, not

Many C APIs do exactly that: they require you (the caller) to malloc your own memory, then pass in a pointer.

Comparing to Apple's 14.1 iPhones million statistic (from the last quarter), it's about twice what Apple last announced. Math: 14.1 million / (1/4 * 365) days ~= 150,000 phones

I would never use this app. Even just from the screenshots I see that it cannot manage to follow even the most basic of iOS UI principles. Most users might not notice so specifically, but they will notice how unnative it is -- and more than

I understand they were busy, but only two or three updates about progress during the entire ordeal (on Twitter) seemed a little low to me. Their "we'll be back shortly" page also didn't link to their Twitter page either, so for many people

Interesting. I would assume that the Mac+dev-program+testing-device combo would convince people to either go for a full-fledged port or not go through with the idea. (Do note that iOS users aren't accustomed to anything non-native, even jus

For kids (likely the target audience of this), the $99 developer program fee would be quite high (let alone the fact they have to register under a parent's name) -- I don't think this will really make an impact on the App Store.

Unless your customer's Android device happens to come from AT&T, where you have the exact same issue. (This isn't to say I don't agree with you that they shouldn't be able to kick you off, but, you know what? No mobile platform is good

Then again, no matter how much time you give yourself, you will find a way to fill it up. Maybe an unrealistic goal is for the best: it might increase productivity, even if it slips.

That's not the point. Has anyone actually made a virus? No. Will somebody? Yes. Are they perceived as better in that regard? Yes. The point is that they are not perceived in that way, so people are not scared of them. It doesn't matter ho

I'd also be concerned that on Android that the user might have a device that doesn't allow off-Market installs, and then I'd have to use a distribution mechanism I don't prefer (maybe even an alternative market like Amazon was rumored to be

The iPhone isn't perfect, either, though. It spits you back out on to the homescreen, which is quite aggravating if you had wanted to install something else. At least with multitasking it no longer loses your spot in the App Store app /too/

True, but each restriction just makes it that much harder to get around. For the majority of people, the first block will stop them, but once you get into cat-and-mouse land, you'll lose a bunch more.
