Combine this with COICA and suddenly just changing your DNS provider becomes quite a bit more difficult.

You'd be very surprised how many people consider being the first Google search result automatically worth of trust. Related: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/how_google_failed_inter...

I think it would actually be fine if they didn't sanction it, and had it violate the warranty (at least), but allowed it (and hid the setting somewhere).

I think the point is not that it's not possible, but that Microsoft and Google have demonstrated that it isn't going to happen, at least from them.

Because Android is the "open" system, and Apple is the "closed" one?

Kinda sad that this ends up on the front page, when there's a lot more technically interesting stuff in Cydia, like Cycript (dynamic JavaScript/Objective-C bridge, http://www.cycript.org/ ) or MobileSubstrate (runtime code patching and hoo

People claim the same issue with Python, but I don't think it's really hurt anyone much. It's usually very obvious and auto-indent is surprisingly possible on a lot of it.

It does, but you can't scroll part of the page in the native way -- iOS users are very accustomed to the kinetic scrolling, anything even slightly different is enough to throw them off and make your app seem "weird".

This last caveat leads to an interesting economic question. As noted above, retail prices for CAPTCHA- solving vary over a wide range, from about $1 per thousand to $20 per thousand. This price spread, and the fact that it’s

At least on iOS, recreating the "feel" of the scroll views is actually impossible with reasonable performance (the CSS 2d transitions don't have the correct interpolation options), so you can't make anything, at least there, that "feels" na

No, you left it unprotected so you didn't need to spend CPU cycles decrypting it, even though you really didn't want to.

I'm an app developer and I'm sure that over half of my users are pirates. I think this is a good thing. It helps me improve my productions, as I talk to the pirates and fix the bugs they find. It helps my product get out there: pirates show

There is only one foolproof check to see if your application is pirated, since only the binary itself has to change (and you can't checksum what's distributed to users). Therefore, there's just one simple thing to patch out -- 5 minutes for

I didn't know that, thanks! I'd reword it as "Stanford Course: iPhone App Development", but I bet the OP didn't know that either.

OK, well, I actually wrote part of a few of them, and they do none of that. First, "replacing system framework with your own hex edited version" -- no. They do patch the kernel, but they exploit it at startup and do dynamic patching using d

In case you are interested in iOS, you can check out the Open Toolchain project: http://code.google.com/p/iphonedevonlinux/wiki/Installation It's not seamless, and you might need to learn Objective-C (don't worry, it's not Java), and you

This issue was actually central to my switch to Chrome. I'm glad it's finally fixed, but when something this important to UI takes over 10 years to get resolved, perhaps the Firefox team needs to just choose a fix (such as the ones suggeste

I'm not sure what's so "shady" about jailbreaking: the processes is very streamlined, and while you can find malicious software, the Cydia Store is about as curated -- if not more -- than the App Store.

There are any number of ways to get around the blacklist, but none of them matter if they don't apply to everyone . It's about the public, not a dedicated tech-person getting around it.

Except the iPhone effectively has no DRM. Load the application into gdb, dump memory, and you've broken it. This is even worse than Android, even: the developers cannot add their own DRM on top, due to both technical and App Store restricti

I'm also guessing this is used in the Top Tweets algorithm, which seems to favor lesser known users in the amount of interest needed to get chosen, but I have no way to back that up.

This might be worse in San Francisco, though, than other places, just due to the sheer iPhone density. I've been on BART trains where over half of the people were on an iPod touch or iPhone (yes, I counted).
