That's not true. Let's see: PS3: OtherOS allowed unsigned code, way before piracy. Wii: Team Twiizers, who are strongly anti-piracy, were the first to run unsigned code. This was later abused for piracy, but only after Nintendo refused to w

My question was more of if you have multiple statements, instead of a single expression, you wanted to stick inside a macro and preserve the ability to call it within another expression. For example: #define SOMEMACRO(x) do { \ int

Great article, although I'd prefer if there was a bit less of a focus on Objective-C and Cocoa, since all the rest applies pretty much the same to plain C. (However, that technique with blocks looks like a good solution to the "many stateme

Funny, I spend the majority of my time on the couch using an iPad (and happily tapping away on my lap, if I have to use the keyboard, which I usually don't).

I think the issue is that for me, the edges are what make or break it. I can't stand one little thing that bugs me every time I use it (for example, the iOS monstrosity of a notification system). I'm sure Google can make polished and smoo

How much input do you actually do on these websites? Facebook, for a major example, is just a sentence or two for each status update, and a word or two for the chat messages.

I think the issue is that (for some, at least) reading is much faster than watching the video, especially combined with the additional loading times.

One example: Android still doesn't use the GPU for the interface, so the scrolling on a brand-new Nexus S still isn't as smooth as on a three-plus year old iPhone 2G. Plus, the lists don't bounce at the end, so not only is it choppier but i

Did you actually read the article? Six kids die in a school bus every year. Awful, yes, but it's nothing compared to how many die in cars. Want to save more kids? Get more school buses with the money, not more seat belts.

One way you can do this same thing, just simpler, is append " http://google.com/url?q= before the NYTimes URL. You still have to click through the Google XSRF prevention page, but it's a lot simpler and doesn't depend on the Googlebot havi

You don't have to do that on the iPhone. There's this magic thing called "autorelease". Call it on an object, and it'll release itself (and its memory) sometime in the future, after the current call stack (probably sometime a few runloops a

iOS has the concept of "autoresizing", which allows for relatively simple flow-based UI. Could you explain (or link to) Android's implementation of the concept? I'm interested to see how it works.

My iPhone 2G on iOS 3.0 can scroll a list smoothly. Every brand new Android phone (possibly excluding the Nexus S -- I haven't yet used one) cannot. Sadly, since I still see devices stuck on 2.1, 2.0, or even 1.6, that fix will not come to

Question: what makes Objective-C horrible? I quite like the way it manages to remain moderately performant while also giving many of the benefits of dynamic languages. (Personally, I find Java horribly restrictive, but that's a separate dis

Is the user, in this case, a thief? If so, and it's a switch you enable, it seems pretty benign to me. (But, before discussing this more: it's not spyware -- or anything -- if it only exists in a patent application.)

That's completely true, but having your app pirated by a ton of people (and engaging the pirates!) can really help drive actual sales, mostly due to exposure.

I have the Bluetooth keyboard, but it (sadly) doesn't solve that: the apps are just not mature enough for serious typing in many situations (especially if that "typing" includes "coding").

There is a distinction there: the way Java is used in the enterprise and for Android apps is very different.
