Whoever wrote this seems to have an extreme hatred of Ruby on Rails. I've personally never used it, but... wow, that was a lot of hate.

It doesn't even have to be an ISP, you get pretty much get the same with most technical support lines on any computer-related product.

Sort of like how Smalltalk replaces 'if' statements with ifTrue: messages?

This is a bit pedantic, but Git isn't an acronym (or all-caps).

iOS actually has a full implementation of Scheme (TinyScheme) running inside the kernel, that manages the (often very complex) permission schemes -- one for each type of pre-installed app or daemon, and then one for the third-party apps a

Or even "Startup Title Junk | Hacker News" -- that keeps the full title, and makes it show up right in your tab.

Thanks for saying that much better than me.

This seems backwards to me. Shouldn't the "extended" description be the one hidden from the user's title bar, not the short one?

That was true for iPhone OS 1.x, but since 2.0 they moved everything to 'mobile' except a few (very heavily sandboxed) daemons. For example, the 'JailbreakMe' jailbreak exploited FreeType running in the browser (Safari), but it still was sa

This is the same thing that the iPhone jailbreakers do: look for security holes to open up the window to "root" (or install another OS: http://www.idroidproject.org/ ) on the iPhone. The sad part is that Android is supposed to solve this p

I'm not sure what to put -- I use Google Apps's "catch-all" feature for my domain, so I have it as paypal@example.com (I also do this for most sites requiring registration, e.g., HN is hn@example.com). While it does end up at the same inbox

Interesting; I've always preferred Little Star (in SF). I guess I just have an attachment to their cornmeal crust, I think it holds up better than the ones from the other places. (Although, I might just be down-rating Zachary's a bit harshl

Objective-C is similar -- you have "setters" and "getters", but since there is no direct ivar access and you have the convenient @property syntax, you end up with a reasonably similar end result.

Another (probably more-known) one: http://opensource.apple.com/ They get ( ahem ) behind on the GPL code releases (especially for iOS), but it's still a useful site.

The "panel" concept reminds me of Twitter for iPad (which I really enjoy), just applied to the entire OS -- a sort of simplified implementation of 10/GUI ( http://10gui.com/ ). It could definitely be more polished, but I'm excited for what

Wait, I'm not sure I understand: "the openness argument is that the code is open and it is" and "this does is limit their openness" -- what do you mean by that? Anyway, my point is that you would not call Firefox an open source project if i

I don't have an answer, but it really undermines their "openness" argument. Related question, if someone knows: Does the Android team take patches from those outside Google? (I know that Chrome does.)

If these dynamic languages are usually used in a mostly-static manner, just without the typing and some added load-time flexibility, doesn't that just mean they operate at a higher level of abstraction? Isn't that a good thing?

I feel that actual "hackers" need to realize that a new name is necessary if they want to disassociate themselves from this depiction. It's like the "begs the question" people ( http://begthequestion.info/ ) -- it's simply unfeasible to cha
