Maybe I don't go to the right videos, but I don't find Youtube comments that bad. They are mostly useless, sometimes a bit too brutally honest, but nothing that offensive. I find comments on mainstream news sites, and on sites using Disqus

I find the FreeBSD one more embarassing, to be honest. The GNU version just does a ton of annex stuff (hex handling, usage(), etc). I have no idea what the hell the FreeBSD one is trying to do.

Dedicated servers, even the cheap ones, tend to offer a ton a disk space. In Europe, Ovh and Hetzner have entry-level offers with 2 or 3 TB at 50€, you might find something in the same prices geographically closer to you. Other than that, t

Generally speaking, SVG is more integrated to the DOM than canvas or WebGL. Every shape you draw is a DOM node, which means you can easily interact with it (mouseover events, ...), but also that it's rather "heavy". It doesn't scale for eff

Yeah, it's amusing how the article focuses on the pageview numbers, which aren't that impressive. A catchy rant making it near the top of HN will easily give you similar numbers. The number of social shares seems more interesting (3k Facebo

If you allocate more memory, programs will use it. Web browsers are notorious for abusing this, but it applies in lots of other places, including system cache. In other words: if you allocate 1GB of RAM to a system and 256MB to another, the

There aren't really any mail.app-like clients, with a heavily simplified interface. Most clients I can think of have very traditional interfaces, or are aimed at big mail users and lean on the heavily configurable side (like, say, mutt). I'

Twitter's single timeline format is very much not designed for following all updates from someone (which is what I'm interested in for a blog). There are ways around it (keeping your subscriptions count very low, list tricks, etc), but it

The learning curve of Chef is pretty steep. The article touches on that, saying that documentation is bad, and I would add that the community provided recipes aren't very good either. But, the whole interest is that it's a one time investme

Someone had made something like that for internship reports, when I was in college. Very handy, when you needed a bonus paragraph here and there on "How this experience made me a better person".

Phantomjs is mainly useful for JS-heavy pages. If you want to scrape that fully, you will need a heavy client-side, and there aren't that many alternatives.

From what I could understand when this bit me, OSX uses a different normalization form from what Linux uses (I'm not even sure of what that means, but hey). OSX uses NFD, while pretty much everyone else uses NFC (by default). So, if you u

I'm always amused by these posts praising how everything just works on the Mac, and how it's so nice not having to worry about [annoying linux/windows stuff #351]. Am I really the only one blind to this effect ? I've used a mac. It's nice.
