There could easily be confounders to that though. Like people who are wealthy might be able to delay satisfaction better than poor, because their needs are more satisfied.

Like anytime you're evaluating someone's compentency, find out what they view as a good example of their work and judge on that. Don't stick to any standardized hiring process, instead get to a burden of proof.

There is no one good interview practice. You got to ask the dev what evidence they have that they're competent and see if you believe them. That's the only way to minimize your chances of false negatives.

The funny part is that Group theory is heavily integrated with the mathematics of neural networks. So much so that some mathematicians say that finding the invariants of groups is what makes NNs work. http://proceedings.mlr.press
