"Taking a piss" is literally urinating. Piss is a synonym for urine. "Taking the piss" in this context means mocking somebody/something. You can also "take the piss" if you're lying, exaggerating or any number of other social mistakes. I

But any cheaper phone is still useless without a contract anyway? The difference isn't $899, it's $899 minus the cost of ownership of an equivalent phone. Even a free phone on a 2 year basic contract is going to be around $600-700, surely

First off, I'm afraid I don't understand what a phone subsidy is, perhaps we don't have them in the UK or I've never seen them on a price plan here. Assuming it's something you pay for owning a smartphone, would it still be there for a smar

When taking a big fall rock climbing the advice is to relax, enjoy the fall and shout something. Animal noises are the most fun, expletives the most common. The shouting is to make sure you're breathing out as you fall onto your harness r

I wasn't arguing against this article being contrary to public opinion, more that it's not a change in what science has said up to this point. I'm more concerned about the damage done by provocative headlines such as these that imply that

This isn't a reversal, at least not on the part of scientists. Reporting like this just reinforces the public's idea of "Why should I do what doctor's say? They just change their mind. First it was eggs..." and so on. Seriously, ask you

What degree of knowledge should be assumed? There's plenty on HN that I don't understand but I'm yet to come across anything that 30 seconds with Google couldn't explain. The only knowledge that is a pre-requisite is how to find information

Various dialects of Indian English are still quite similar to British English during the 18th/19th centuries, which is why sometimes Indian English sounds quite archaic (do the needful, etc.). Emphasised nouns are capitalised in some of the

I've used both the phones in your post and by and large I agree with you. That said, you seem to be talking about phones in a business environment. Do the users of the phones you're talking about own them? I wonder if they treat them wit

Completely anecdotal, but I've tried chessboxing (as an amateur) a number of times. I'm an awful, awful chess player but a decent boxer and I'm reasonably fit. Personally I've found some sort of link between mental and physical exhaustion,
