I think it'd be more accurate to say "Even /fairly large/ web companies can now be built [et cetera]". Good luck putting Google on AWS. Or (relevant to the name of this website) AWS.

I am going to guess "no". For three people to scale a site to that size, I imagine it was a daily battle just to keep the thing flying. Not to mention, if they ran into a problem that could potentially be solved with some deep magic done on

In my imagination, it would be a touch-optimized way to issue commands. By checking your history file, the program could build a library of your most used commands. So maybe you tap a pleasantly large icon representing the server you want t

An employee costs more than their salary; there's health insurance/benefits, payroll tax, IT+support costs, etc.

Well, I just lost one coworker and my boss, both of whom were good people and good workers. I think this seals my decision to move on; I only really came to work here because I did internships and felt like I owed it to my boss to put in a

When your value proposition is "we won't sue you", you've lost your competitive advantage in innovation. Note that this also applies to the RIAA/MPAA.

Did you read the article? It's not related to the virus's genome, it's related to the RNA that genome produces, which the interviewee contends is always doublestranded. In fact they specifically address DNA viruses and herpes.

.015% is pretty funny as a "fuck you" number. On a billion in revenue, that's 150k, or probably about what they pay one senior developer in a year.

Sounds like exactly the same thing as the South Korean produced 'Between' app, which is already cross platform. Not to say that they couldn't execute better, but it's not a novel idea. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.co.vc

To me the most astonishing part of this article is that they can 'bake' graphene out of graphite oxide with consumer-grade tech. Did I miss something, or is that not a huge step forward for graphene synthesis?

I don't think swapping batteries is a good analog for fast recharge. For one, the cost of a kilowatt hour in AA batteries well exceeds $100, even buying in 20-count lots. From the wall, it costs less than a dollar. Swapping batteries is als

This is patently untrue. I have a friend who graduated from UCLA with a computing minor who was working (unpaid) in a Stanford lab who couldn't find paying work for over 9 months. And no, he is not some kind of idiot, he got a 2390 on the n

I'm not proficient at law either, but I don't think selling exploits is illegal. Unauthorized computer access is, but as long as they aren't doing that access themselves, I think they're in the clear. The analogy I first think of would be a

"Lifesaving" is a pretty nebulous concept. Does a plow which enables higher crop yields and thus less starvation constitute as life saving? Or a weather satellite, which allows prediction of rain patterns and more efficient irrigation usage

The graphics are much, much better than something from 2005. For reference, here's a screenshot from a well-regarded 2005 console game: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/82/Gun_Showdown.j... Especially for the PS3 hardware, the p

11 separate pages, with a landing page to get to the 11 separate pages? That seems a little excessive, especially considering the low content of each page.

I think the authors of this article may not realize that a gigabit is equivalent to 125 megabytes. The caption saying that it's "actually much faster" than the 134 Mbps listed by speedtest is silly.
