The reliability of LED lights is, from my experience, crazy bad. We installed all-LED lighting in the office. Over the past two years way over 50% of the LED lamps have died. Yesterday I ordered yet another batch of 25 new LED lamps. The of

This is not correct. Before covid only people who felt like thay might have a cold or similar wore face masks, to reduce risk of infecting others. (This is my understanding after living there for one year and then travelling for a month eve

Fast forward a few years. Look at the time it takes to design chips. Look at where the market and tech is going (M1 and AMD especially). Compare with RIM and Nokia. There is a "roadrunner" effect where a colossal company will cont

Interesting article, I didn’t know all common colds were once deadly epidemics but it seems logical thinking about it. I wonder if the rna vaccines brought out for covid will be applied to more and more viruses. Seems like a path towards er

How do you handle hevc/h265 and resolutions above 4K? It’s not in the rtmp spec, so not supported by either ffmpeg or gstreamer. But chinese companies ship cameras that hack it and run rtmp for it anyway, leading users to peskering me

The amount of publicity this generated for youtube-dl is astounding... I would love for this to be a ”the plan to get rid of youtube-dl backfired badly for RIAA” ending. But I guess RIAA is reviled enough already so nothing they do really m

Yes, for sure there is some overhead in this. I checked in Tracy now and with a lot of gui open, using many custom labels etc, it takes on the order of 150-200 us to do that part of the gui. Issuing the GL draw list commands takes some time

I use ImGui for gui in a user-facing app that is "large-ish" (~500k LOC maybe). When removing items from lists etc I used to keep drawing non-removed items in the list so the user would not see a "glitch". But I realized

Well, maybe. We use it user-facing for suite of niche vr/tele-op applications and it works wonderfully. We have support for Korean, Japanese, Hebrew (serious issues with right-to-left in our implementation though). The thing about ImGu

Happy to see ImGui trend here on HN! It is an amazing tool that is used in a lot of game engines for making internal/dev gui:s. The principle of drawing gui "as you go", interleaved with control flow makes it easier+faster to

The risk here is that a terror attack on grid infra knocks out so much of society. No electricity => so much trouble. My point is that with solar+storage you get a more resilient system that can continue to provide power even if central

This is true, but also not true. Helicopters are stuck as a concept: large main rotor and tailrotor and also expensive parts and traditional aerospace practices. There are other physical paths, e.g. Osprey, Cheyenne. But the big thing now i

To me this whole thread reads like an ad for solar + local storage. There should be tremendous resilience advantages compared to grid power. I’m surprised security/defence authorities aren’t pushing for that?

This is a good question, I see three main reasons but I may miss something: 1. Hop count is not one on the ground to go same distance. 2. Speed of light is significantly faster in vacuum. 3. The path is potentially straighter for longer dis

If I understood it correctly Starlink doesn't send between satellites yet, only sat<->ground. Sat<->sat is a big point of starlink and when they roll that out the latency should go down, especially for starlink<->star
